Approach are working closely with the Enterprise Architecture team of a major Federal Government Department to identify an experienced Solution/Cloud Architect to support complex technology initiatives and contribute to the organisation’s broader enterprise architecture direction.

This is an opportunity to work in an environment with a unique whole-of-government perspective, where technology decisions can influence major programs, government capability and outcomes across Australia.

Canberra / ACT based candidates only. 3 days per week on-site

The Opportunity
As a Solution Architect, you will provide technical leadership across the design and delivery of complex technology solutions, ensuring they align with business objectives, enterprise architecture principles and contemporary technology standards.

You will work closely with Enterprise, Solution, Security, Data and Business Architects, project teams and senior stakeholders to translate business requirements into practical architecture and delivery outcomes.

The role will also contribute to the development of current-state, transition-state and target-state architectures, technology roadmaps, standards, reference models and enterprise architecture governance.

Key Responsibilities

• Design end-to-end technology solutions aligned to business objectives and enterprise architecture principles.
• Translate business requirements into solution architectures, designs and technical specifications.
• Provide architectural leadership throughout project delivery, from initial design through to implementation.
• Lead technology selection and provide advice on platforms, products and integration approaches.
• Develop integration patterns, APIs, data flows and interoperability approaches.
• Ensure solutions address security, privacy, compliance and non-functional requirements.
• Provide advice on cloud architecture, cloud optimisation, performance and service reliability.
• Identify and manage architectural risks, dependencies, technical debt and emerging technology considerations.
• Develop and maintain architecture artefacts including capability maps, technology standards, reference models and reusable architecture content.
• Contribute to architecture assurance, design reviews and Architecture Review Board activities.
• Support technology roadmaps and strategic investment planning.
• Work with Enterprise Architecture to improve consistency, standardisation, reuse and rationalisation across technology services.
• Provide contemporary advice on emerging technologies and enterprise-level technology opportunities and risks.

About You
We are looking for a Solution Architect who can operate comfortably between strategic enterprise architecture and practical technology delivery.
You will ideally have:

• Demonstrated experience delivering solution architecture for complex applications in secure and regulated environments.
• Experience working across complex, whole-of-government or large enterprise technology environments.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to influence technical decisions across delivery and architecture teams.
• Experience contributing to enterprise architecture, technology roadmaps, standards and target-state architectures.
• Experience using architecture repositories, modelling tools and recognised architecture notations.
• Strong understanding of public and private cloud architecture.
• Experience working with technical teams to optimise cloud consumption, performance and reliability.

Highly Desirable
Experience with one or more of the following will be highly regarded:

• Australian Government security frameworks including the ISM and PSPF.
• Enterprise architecture frameworks such as TOGAF.
• Multi-cloud or hybrid technology environments.
• Identity and Access Management.
• Application architecture, design and integration.
• Architecture governance and assurance within a large government or regulated environment.

This is more than a traditional Solution Architect delivery role. You will have the opportunity to contribute to enterprise-level architecture decisions, influence future technology capability and work alongside a newly established Enterprise Architecture function.

You will be working on problems that sit across a broad government landscape, with exposure to strategic planning, architecture governance, cloud transformation and complex technology delivery.
