We’re teaming up once again with our long-time friends at Active l Business Fitness - and this time, we’re on the hunt for a seriously savvy Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to take the reins on all things testing, coverage, and quality uplift.
This is a lead role with real technical teeth - part on-the-tools, part strategic, and fully focused on making quality everybody’s business.
If you're a hands-on SDET leader with a love for automation, a bias for shipping, and a knack for driving culture change... we need to talk.
So, what’s the Active l Business Fitness story?
Active l Business Fitness helps accounting teams thrive through smarter systems, streamlined workflows, and tools that support real growth. Their flagship SaaS platform, Active, powers everything from compliance and CRM to workpapers and workflows - and it’s already trusted by thousands of firms across Australia and the UK.
They’ve got a strong roadmap, a deeply committed engineering and product team, and a clever little AI bot (Coach) handling the low-hanging support fruit - so the real humans can focus on the interesting stuff.
They're fully remote, proudly Aussie-built, and entering a new era of platform uplift - bringing quality to the forefront and expanding their QA leadership capability to drive test coverage, collaboration, and continuous improvement across the board.
The mission?
Step in as the Team Lead and help level up their entire approach to quality - from strategy and tooling, to test coverage and cross-functional collaboration.
You’ll lead a growing QA crew (currently 2, soon to be 3), and play a key role in embedding shift-left testing principles, improving test automation coverage (Ghost Inspector to start, open to other tools), and ensuring that testing becomes a seamless part of the engineering process - not an afterthought.
You’ll also champion a healthy test culture across the org - from bug triage to dev handovers to stakeholder comms - while still staying technical and close to the work.
Here’s what you’ll be doing:
- Lead, coach and mentor a small-but-growing testing team (mid-level + junior + future automation engineer).
- Drive adoption of shift-left SDET practices, embedding quality earlier in the SDLC.
- Maintain and expand automated test coverage (target: 80%+ for new features).
- Build and refine test plans, regression suites, and exploratory test cases.
- Work closely with product, UX and engineering to align on clear, testable acceptance criteria.
- Attend code reviews and releases, offering guidance on risk and quality.
- Help steer tooling decisions, improve documentation, and level-up reporting (flakiness, trends, repeat bugs, etc).
- Own the green tick - ensuring releases are stable, high-quality, and ready for prime time.
What we're looking for: You’re a hands-on SDET lead who’s equally strong in people, process, and product. You love great test automation, but you also know how to triage, troubleshoot, and coach others through the craft of thoughtful testing.
You're calm in chaos, clear in communication, and know how to build trust with cross-functional teams - from devs to product to platform leads.
Here’s what will set you up for success: - 5+ years in software QA (manual + automation), with recent leadership experience.
- Experience leading a small team, with proven mentoring and coaching chops.
- Strong working knowledge of QA strategy, testing types, tooling, and modern SDLC practices.
- Confident building automation suites (Ghost Inspector, Playwright, Selenium, or similar).
- Great communication skills - you write clearly, document well, and collaborate with care.
- Background in SaaS, with bonus points for accounting software or workflow-heavy platforms.
- Exposure to shift-left testing, CI/CD, and supporting developers to test smarter.
- Experience with TypeScript, .NET/C#, SQL, GitHub and cloud platforms (AWS or Azure) a big plus.
- Alignment with “The Way We Win” values - curious, accountable, collaborative, and always looking to lift others up.
Why Business Fitness? Because you’ll step into a SDET role with scope, impact, and support - where quality is taken seriously, and where your ideas will genuinely shape the future of the product and platform.
You’ll have space to lead, modernise, and experiment - with a team and culture that has your back.
- Remote-first across Australia
- Full-time role
- Real growth opportunity - lead the evolution of QA in a fast-growing SaaS org
If you’re ready to lead the charge on quality - and be part of a team where your work is seen, valued, and impactful - we’d love to hear from you.
