Senior DevSecOps Engineer
Contract  |  12 Months  |  Sydney CBD (Hybrid — 2-3 days onsite)  |  $1,000/day + GST
 
The Opportunity
A leading financial services organisation is seeking a Senior DevSecOps Engineer to join their engineering practice on an initial 6-month contract. This is a high-impact, hands-on role — you will be embedded within a cross-functional delivery team, representing the DevSecOps practice across value streams and working alongside senior engineering and delivery stakeholders.
 
This is a backfill for a long-tenured contractor; the organisation is looking for someone who brings fresh energy, a strong technical foundation, and the ability to drive meaningful change rather than maintain the status quo.
 
What You'll Be Doing

• Design, build, and maintain end-to-end CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and related tooling
• Drive process automation across the software delivery lifecycle — from code to production
• Embed application security practices throughout the pipeline (shift-left, guardrails-before-gates)
• Champion secure-by-design engineering — you own the quality and security of what you build
• Architect and implement AI agent capabilities using Microsoft Azure AI services and related frameworks
• Build intelligent automation solutions from the ground up, not just configure existing tools
• Represent the DevSecOps practice in delivery value streams, engaging directly with senior stakeholders
• Mentor and uplift engineering team members on DevSecOps principles and practices
• Translate complex business requirements into technical solutions and drive adoption across squads

 
What We're Looking For
Three non-negotiable capability areas. You need demonstrable, hands-on experience across all three.
 
1. Pipeline Engineering & Process Automation

• Deep, practical experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines end-to-end
• Proficiency with Azure DevOps (Azure Pipelines, Azure Table Storage, Boards)
• Strong scripting and automation capability — you build solutions, you don't just describe them
• Experience across cloud platforms; Azure preferred, other major providers considered

 
2. Application Security

• Solid understanding of AppSec frameworks and security-first engineering principles
• Hands-on experience integrating security tooling and practices into delivery pipelines
• Familiar with the 'guardrails before gates' model and security champion methodologies
• Ability to drive AppSec adoption across engineering squads without being a blocker

 
3. AI & Agent Engineering

• Real-world implementation experience building AI agents — not just using AI tools
• Ability to design and build agentic systems from scratch using Microsoft Azure AI or equivalent
• Understanding of model fine-tuning, prompt engineering, and AI pipeline integration
• Comfortable working in a space where patterns are still being defined

 
Stakeholder & Delivery Skills
The technical skills get you in the room. These skills determine your impact.
 

• Confident engaging with senior engineering leaders, delivery leads, and product stakeholders
• Able to understand and translate business requirements into technical delivery outcomes
• Experience leading or mentoring within engineering teams
• Strong communicator who can represent a practice and influence without authority

 
The Details

• Duration: 12-month contract (strong potential for extension subject to performance and org direction)
• Rate: $1,000/day + GST
• Location: Sydney CBD — hybrid working, 2-3 days per week in office (mandatory for key meetings)
• Start: ASAP — role has been active for 4-5 weeks, client is ready to move quickly for the right profile

 
What Won't Work Here
The client has interviewed several candidates who have been eliminated at second-round technical stage. Common failure points:
 

• Candidates who can talk about pipelines and agents but can't demonstrate they've built them
• AppSec exposure without genuine security mindset embedded in delivery practice
• AI 'experience' that amounts to using ChatGPT or Copilot rather than engineering agentic systems
• Candidates who are not willing or able to be onsite in the CBD when required
