Policy is powerful when it’s simple, human, and built to move.
And here, it’s more than words on a page - It’s treated like a product.
Something you own, iterate, and champion. Something that shapes how Australia’s most important research infrastructure is built, accessed, and trusted.
That’s why we’re partnering with the Australian Access Federation (AAF) to find a Policy Analyst with big-picture thinking, great instincts for collaboration, and the confidence to translate complex ideas into frameworks that stick.
If you’re equal parts Business Analyst, Change Manager, and Product Owner - driven by curiosity and fuelled by a passion for security, trust, identity, and innovation - this is your moment to make an impact!
Why this role is genuinely cool:
You’ll be the go-to for policy as a product
Forget dusty binders and rigid frameworks - this is about building something alive. You’ll reimagine and roll out policy tools that are co-designed with the community, shaping the future across AI, cybersecurity, data sharing, and quantum tech.
You’ll shape national best practice
AAF’s frameworks are the connective tissue that lets researchers, universities, government, and global federations work as one. Your work won’t sit on a shelf - it will directly influence how trust and identity evolve across Australia’s research sector and beyond.
You’ll join a high-impact, values-led team
With over 1.5M users and partners that include CSIRO, ARDC, NHMRC, and ANSTO - plus global collaborators from Estonia to Iceland - AAF punches well above its weight. They’re a lean, values-driven crew with a startup mindset and national influence.
What the work looks like:
- Own and evolve AAF’s national technology policy framework - a living toolkit for Australia’s research sector, built on the shoulders of EU standards and adapted for AAF’s unique context.
- Bring people together - run workshops, gather insights, identify gaps, and turn messy ideas into policy that’s crisp, clear, and actionable.
- Work across boundaries - engineering, legal, product, government - you’ll be the connector who helps the whole system move in sync.
- Make the complex simple - help organisations navigate privacy, authentication, and security policy without drowning in jargon or red tape.
- Shape the agenda - present findings, lead stakeholder discussions, and push forward change that matters, not just compliance checklists.
- Bring policy to life - guide implementation and change management so frameworks don’t just exist on paper - they work in the real world.
The mindset we’re looking for: - Think like a business analyst: run workshops, bridge business and tech, translate needs into plain language, and anticipate what’s next
- You move like a change manager: helping orgs evolve from today to tomorrow
- You own like a product person: curious, accountable, and focused on end-to-end value
- You’re not afraid of ambiguity or autonomy - you thrive in it
You might have: - Policy analysis or research experience (but it's not essential)
- A background in higher ed, research, or government
- Familiarity with cybersecurity, privacy, or trust/identity frameworks
- The ability to write, communicate, and influence across technical and non-technical groups
- A sharp brain, calm presence, and knack for seeing both the forest and the trees
The details: - 2-year fixed term (standard for this NFP sector) - full benefits included
- Remote-friendly across Australia (Brisbane is HQ - East Coast preferred)
- Minimal travel - mostly remote, with occasional events or meetups
- Hybrid flexibility and bonus “recharge” leave over Christmas/New Year
This role punches well above its weight and is shaping the frameworks that shape the future.
