This is a pivotal role at the center of major policy, infrastructure and growth decisions - where regional planning intersects with major projects, resource and renewable energy development, economic transition, social impacts and community development.
Reporting to the Manager Planning and Environment, you will lead Council’s strategic planning program and oversee delivery of high-impact initiatives, including:
- Leading council’s contributions to the Greater Whitsunday Regional Plan
- Planning Scheme review and targeted amendments
- Delivery of the Isaac Regional Housing Growth Study (funded under the Queensland Government’s Scheme Supply Fund)
- Policy and strategy development to support the growth of our communities, housing, infrastructure and major projects
- Contributing to Council’s Major Project assessment, including renewables and resource projects
- Coordination of Council’s LGIP, in partnership with technical leads.
You will play a key role in translating complex planning and development challenges into clear, practical advice and achievable outcomes.
As a senior leader, you will:
- Drive Council’s long-term planning direction
- Lead a high-performing strategic planning function
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, state agencies, industry and the development sector
- Influence major project outcomes across the region
We’re looking for a planner who brings both technical depth and strategic judgement. We are less focused on years of experience and more on capability and mindset. You will bring strong strategic thinking, sound judgement, and a high level of initiative—along with the motivation to learn quickly and deliver outcomes in a complex regional environment.

To be successful in this role, you must hold (or can obtain prior to the commencement) the following qualifications:
Mandatory:
Desirable: - Tertiary qualifications in land use planning or other relevant field, enabling eligibility for full membership to the Planning Institute of Australia
You will receive: - Salary $123,078.59 per annum (Stream A, Level 8)
- Nominally 72.5 hours per fortnight (Monday to Friday)
- 5 weeks annual leave @ 17.5% loading
- RDO’s in accordance with Council Policy
- Up to 14.5% super in accordance with Council Policy
