Are you a passionate and engaging primary teacher eager to teach in a remote community with a well-established bilingual program? Do you have the knowledge to design and deliver a learning program that supports the diverse needs, characteristics, and learning styles of students?
Located near the breathtaking Tjoritja/MacDonnell Ranges, less than 2.5 hours from Alice Springs, this school is a pioneer of Two-Way education, celebrating its 50th anniversary. In 1973, it was one of five schools in the Northern Territory to pilot a bilingual education program, with instruction in both Pitjantjatjara and English—a practice that has continued through to this present day. Culture and language are taught together, in an approach known as Two-Way or Both Ways education. The community remains deeply committed to the school’s bilingual program. The school also partners with CSIRO’s Science Pathways for Indigenous Communities STEM Education Project, where Two-Way Science integrates Aboriginal ecological knowledge through outdoor and classroom activities.
The school has around 30 students, with approximately 10-15 in the lower primary class. As the Transition (Foundation) to Year 3 teacher, you will team-teach alongside local educators, supporting bilingual education through Learning on Country and Two-Way Science. Programs include Learning Through Doing for Mathematics, Read Write Inc. for reading, and Walking Talking Text for oral language.
The community, home to around 250 residents, is nestled in a valley at the western end of the MacDonnell Ranges, surrounded by gorges, creek beds, and abundant flora and fauna, including a notable donkey population! Highlights of the nearby Mereenie Loop include Glen Helen Gorge, perfect for swimming and picnicking; Ormiston Gorge, popular for hiking and photography; and Ormiston Pound Walk, a half-day trek through dramatic landscapes. Other nearby attractions include Ellery Creek Big Hole, ideal for swimming, and Standley Chasm, where scenic walking trails are illuminated at midday. Less than two hours away, Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park offers an awe-inspiring rim walk.
The community is equipped with a general store, swimming pool, community hall, football oval, basketball courts, childcare, a full-time clinic, and home care services.
