We're back partnering with our long-time crew at Business Fitness - and this one sits right at the intersection of cloud, data, and what's next.
They're hiring a Cloud Data Engineer to help shape how data is actually used across their platform - not just stored.
So... what's the story?
Business Fitness builds Active Platform - a SaaS product used by accounting firms across Australia and the UK.
It's a seriously robust platform already.
But under the hood? There's a huge opportunity.
Data is flowing in from everywhere:
- Product usage (millions of events)
- Core application databases
- Documents, PDFs, emails (and growing fast)
Now the focus shifts to:
- Structuring it
- Connecting it
- Making it usable (internally + externally)
- And setting the foundation for AI
That's where you come in.
The role (what you'll actually be doing) This sits in the Platform team (DevOps + Security) - not a siloed data function.
You'll be:
- Building and owning cloud-based data pipelines
- Working across Azure (or AWS/GCP equivalent) environments
- Using Python for real data work (not just SQL wrappers)
- Helping shape how data is modelled, stored, and accessed
- Pulling together data from multiple sources into something usable
- Supporting analytics, reporting, and AI initiatives
It's roughly:
- 50% data pipelines & infrastructure
- 30% cloud / DevOps-adjacent work
- 20% analytics + collaboration
And importantly - you'll own projects end-to-end, not just a slice of them
What they're looking for This isn't a "perfect checklist" hire. It's about the right mix.
Core things that matter:
- Strong cloud experience (Azure ideal, AWS/GCP absolutely fine)
- Solid Python skills (actual usage - scripting, data processing, notebooks, etc.)
- Experience in SaaS / startup / smaller environments
- Comfortable sitting between DevOps and data
- Someone who can figure things out without a playbook
You might be:
- A data engineer who's worked close to platform teams
- A cloud / DevOps engineer who's leaned into data
- Or someone who's done a bit of both in a smaller team
If you've only ever worked in highly segmented enterprise teams... this probably won't hit the same.
Why this role is interesting Most "data roles" are:
- Either pure analytics
- Or super siloed engineering
This isn't that.
You'll be:
- Working across the full data lifecycle
- Building things from the ground up
- Close to product, AI, and real business decisions
- In a team where you can actually see the impact of your work
And you'll have the support of:
- DevOps engineers
- Product teams
- AI / Data specialists
...but still own your lane.
The environment - SaaS product company (not consulting)
- Smaller, tight-knit team
- High ownership, low bureaucracy
- Real investment into data + AI
- Strong collaboration across teams
The bottom line If you like:
- Being close to the problem
- Owning outcomes end-to-end
- Working across cloud + data (not just one)
- And helping build something properly
This is a very, very good role.
