Lead HV Design Engineer - National Grid and Data Centres
UK (remote or hybrid working)
Up to £90k + car & overtime package

The role
We’re seeking a Lead HV Design Engineer to take a key role within the substation design team. You’ll provide technical leadership, ensure design excellence, and support the delivery of complex projects from concept through to completion.
You’ll oversee and coordinate multiple design projects, guide and develop design engineers, and maintain a strong focus on safety, quality and efficiency throughout.
Key responsibilities:
- Deliver technically sound, cost-effective HV substation designs that meet client specifications, budgets and programme requirements
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and support to engineers, project teams and clients
- Undertake design verification and approval of HV design packages, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements
- Support tendering and contract processes through technical input and review of design documentation
- Contribute to process improvement, design standards and innovation within the design function
- Maintain close collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders to achieve seamless project delivery
- Lead by example in promoting safety, professional integrity and continuous improvement
The candidate We’re looking for an ambitious, technically strong individual with a deep understanding of substation design, ideally within the Transmission & Distribution environment.
- Degree (BEng/BSc) in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (or HND with significant relevant experience)
- Proven experience in HV substation design, with strong working knowledge of National Grid specifications, British Standards and UK DNO/TNO design requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Power Transmission & Distribution or similar sector
- Confident using 2D CAD design software (Autodesk products preferred)
- CDAE Certification is highly desirable - however, if you don’t currently hold it, full support and sponsorship will be provided to help you gain certification
- Strong communication, organisational and leadership skills with a proactive, delivery-focused approach
