A school in Meekatharra, located 750 kilometres north of Perth, is seeking a Special Needs teacher for 2025. Situated in the heart of the Midwest, the school serves a diverse local population of 700 people and 1,000 across the district. With an enrolment of approximately 150 students from Kindergarten to Year 12, over 90% of the student body identifies as Aboriginal. The school also offers the vibrant KindiLink program for preschool-aged children.In this role, you’ll work across the entire K-12 school, supporting students with diverse disabilities and learning challenges in both one-on-one and small group settings. Your focus will be on addressing the educational and social-emotional needs of students, including those with neurodiversity, global developmental delays, and FASD. You’ll play a key role in implementing educational adjustments for students with diagnosed disabilities and collaborating with teachers to facilitate effective learning in both mainstream and special education environments. Additionally, you will assist in SEN planning for students needing tailored learning adjustments, provide literacy and numeracy intervention, and support the professional growth of Education Assistants who work directly with special needs students.
Many students come from the Ngoonooru Wajarri and Yugunga-Nya family groups and students have the unique opportunity to learn the Wajarri language with expert teachers. Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEOs) play a vital role in supporting the learning community, providing cultural guidance, and maintaining strong connections between the school and the local community. The school places significant emphasis on literacy and numeracy, student well-being, attendance, and early intervention. The school is part of the MultiLit - Closing the Gap program to support strong literacy foundations for early years children.
