About Us
At the Asylum Seekers Centre (ASC), we provide a welcoming environment and critical frontline services for people seeking asylum in our community. We are an independent, values-driven organisation that believes in compassion, connection, collaboration, innovation, and keeping people at the centre of everything we do.
We don't just advocate; we build community, protect human rights, and amplify the voices of those with lived experience.
The Opportunity
Are you a strategic storyteller who knows how to navigate a fast-moving media landscape? Do you want to use your PR, digital strategy, and media relations skills to shape a vital public narrative?
As our Communication and Media Manager, you will hold the keys to ASC’s public voice. Reporting directly to the Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships, you will lead our strategic communications, spearhead proactive media opportunities, manage emerging public issues, brand reputation, and design data-driven marketing campaigns that inspire public support and donor acquisition.
This role offers a balance of high-impact strategic leadership and hands-on content creation, and is supported by a digital communications specialist.
What a typical week will look like:
- Strategic Voice: Developing and driving an organisation-wide communications strategy that directly advances our mission and advocacy priorities.
- Campaign & Marketing Delivery: Designing, executing, and analysing integrated marketing campaigns to boost donor acquisition, supporter retention, and community engagement.
- Media & PR: Pitching stories, features, and op-eds to journalists, while preparing media releases and briefing notes for our spokespeople.
- Digital & Brand Leadership: Overseeing our brand identity across all digital channels (website, social, EDM newsletters) to ensure compelling, unified, and dignified storytelling.
- Crisis & Issues Management: Providing rapid-response messaging and managing brand reputation during high-profile or sensitive sector updates.
- Capacity Building: Upskilling and training our passionate staff, volunteers, and lived-experience advocates in media engagement and public messaging.
What you will bring to the team: - Relevant Experience: A proven track record in strategic communications, media relations, marketing, public relations, or journalism.
- The Toolkit: Solid exposure to digital marketing environments, segmenting audiences, running campaign workflows, and analysing content performance.
- Impactful writing: Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a knack for turning complex policy or human issues into accessible, deeply compelling copy.
- The Network: Established connections with journalists, editors, and media outlets (bonus points if you have experience in the NFP, multicultural, or human rights space).
- The Mindset: A warm, values-driven collaborator who balances empathy with diplomacy, thrives under pressure, and understands how to approach storytelling through a culturally safe lens.
Why you’ll love working with us: - Purpose: See the direct impact of your storytelling on the lives of people seeking asylum every single day.
- Culture: Join a collaborative and supportive team where your safety, wellbeing, and professional growth genuinely matter.
- Tax-Free Benefits: Access to generous not-for-profit salary packaging benefits (up to $15,900 tax-free per year plus an extra $2,650 for meals/entertainment).
- Hybrid Flexibility: Based out of our vibrant, community-centred office in Newtown, with regular work-from-home flexibility.
