Job Title: Horizontal Borer / CNC Milling Machinist

About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Horizontal Borer / CNC Milling Machinist to join a busy and growing engineering workshop.
This hands-on role will involve setting up, programming and operating CNC horizontal boring and milling machines to manufacture and repair precision-engineered components. You will work to tight tolerances ranging from approximately 0.1mm down to 0.01mm, primarily machining materials such as mild steel and brass.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in both CNC milling and horizontal boring, with the ability to carry out manual programming from scratch. While preset programs are available, the ability to independently create and edit programs will be highly regarded.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up, program and operate horizontal boring and CNC milling machines
- Perform manual CNC programming from scratch and edit existing programs as required
- Work with Heidenhain and/or Fagor CNC controls
- Machine precision components to strict specifications and tolerances
- Select and set up appropriate tooling, fixtures and work-holding devices
- Read and interpret technical drawings, specifications and work instructions
- Machine a range of materials, including mild steel and brass
- Measure and inspect finished components using micrometres, verniers, callipers, gauges and other precision measuring equipment
- Ensure components meet required quality standards and tolerances
- Troubleshoot machining and programming issues and make necessary adjustments
- Perform routine machine maintenance and maintain a clean, safe and organised work area
- Complete production and quality documentation accurately
- Work collaboratively with the workshop team to meet production schedules and deadlines
- Follow all workplace health and safety procedures
Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:
- A recognised Trade Certificate in Engineering - Mechanical Trade, Fitting & Machining, or a related discipline
- Ideally 5-6+ years' experience as a CNC Machinist, Milling Machinist or Horizontal Borer
- Strong hands-on experience with CNC milling and horizontal boring machines
- Experience with Heidenhain and/or Fagor controls is highly desirable
- Strong experience setting up machines, tooling, fixtures and work-holding equipment
- The ability to read and interpret detailed engineering and technical drawings
- Experience machining to tight tolerances, ideally between 0.1mm and 0.01mm
- Strong knowledge of precision measuring and inspection techniques
- Experience working with materials such as mild steel and brass
- Full Australian working rights
