An Educational Charitable trust is seeking Alternative Education Tutor for fixed term contract till 18th Dec 2026.
Purpose of Role
The position combines educational support with pastoral care to help vulnerable young people achieve their potential and transition successfully into further education, training, or employment.
Key Responsibilities:
Programme Delivery and Student Support
Design and deliver engaging, project based learning programmes aligned to student strengths, needs, interests, and behaviours.
Develop and regularly review Individual Learning Plans ILPs with students, whanau, and enrolling schools, ensuring coverage of:
Literacy and numeracy goals appropriate to student level
Wellbeing goals health, social, behaviour
Career competencies and vocational pathways
Create a safe, healthy learning environment that supports student engagement
Align teaching and behavioural practices to Positive Behaviour for Learning principles
Mentor specific students to set goals and develop transition plans
Student Transitions
Moving Into Alternative Education:
Develop initial Individual Learning Plans ILPs with students, as well as whanau and enrolling schools as required
Facilitate suitable programmes and connect students with available support services
Moving Through Alternative Education:
Monitor student progress and update ILPs regularly
Update student progress on a daily basis
Ensure systematic programme planning based on National Curriculum coverage
Moving On From Alternative Education:
Monitor student progress against transition plans
Report student movements and notify schools and organisation of any disengagement
Whanau and Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with parents, whanau, and caregivers
Communicate effectively about student attendance, achievements, and behaviours
Actively promote cultural practices that help students connect with their identity, language, and culture, especially Māori and Pasifika youth
Administration and Compliance
Maintain accurate records and reporting to meet contractual obligations
Gather evidence of student achievement for portfolios
Ensure Health and Safety requirements are followed at all times
Participate in Professional Development programmes and ongoing inquiry learning
Report weekly to management on student progress and centre activities
Job Requirements:
Full NZ driver's license
Understanding of the New Zealand Curriculum (preferred)
Previous experience working with at-risk youth, rangatahi, or in the education sector (highly regarded)
Ability to develop and evaluate age-appropriate programmes and activities
Relevant teaching or youth work qualifications
Solution-focused, adaptable, creative, and inventive approach to engaging young people
Recognition that education offers a pathway forward for vulnerable youth
Openness to working with young people with diverse needs and behaviours
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Strong organisational and planning abilities
Competent in Word, Excel
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Understanding of and commitment to supporting Maori and Pasifika cultural identity
Must pass Ministry of Justice check, reference check and drug test.
