The Institute of Directors is on a mission to cultivate a vibrant and diverse pipeline of directors in Aotearoa New Zealand, and one of the key opportunities is for a 'Future Director' to join the IoD Board.
About the IoD:
The Institute of Directors (IoD) is the driving force behind good governance in Aotearoa New Zealand, enabling directors to provide value to their organisations and positively transform the future.
IoD is an incorporated society, with an independent Board responsible for charting and overseeing our strategic course. Alongside, our National Council serves as the guardian and kaitiaki of our organisation, ensuring members' needs are not just heard but actively championed.
Our member network comprises 10,500+ members spanning various sectors, from private and public to not-for-profit, NZX-listed, community, and iwi entities, offering an extensive community for members to connect to, and a breadth of perspectives, experiences and insights to learn from.
Your Role as a 'Future Director'
Our successful 'Future Director' will gain invaluable hands-on experience and mentorship that will shape your future as a director. You'll actively participate in all board meetings, contributing to discussions by bringing your unique perspective, ideas, and experiences to the table. While you will not be a voting Board member, the insights you will glean and the connections you will forge will be important assets on your journey toward governance excellence.
The skills and experience we are seeking
Ideally, our Future Director will bring the following skills and experience:
- Is an IoD member on the path to becoming Chartered and eager to make a difference to the governance landscape.
- Champions diversity and inclusion, ensuring our Board reflects our current and future members.
- Has executive experience in either education, marketing or digital/technology coupled with membership organisation experience, ideally with a strong customer and commercial focus.
- Has completed the Company Directors' Course or other formal governance training.
- Shares our passion for strengthening connections with Māori, Pasifika and Asian members and partners, enriching our organisation's purpose.
Board meetings There are approximately 6 board meetings per year as well as an AGM and board strategy day. Board meetings are split between online and in-person which are usually held in Wellington. The Future Director will be welcome to join board committee(s) where relevant.
Remuneration and benefits IoD board roles are voluntary and recognised through our volunteer recognition framework. For board members, this includes complementary attendance at IoD events including our annual leadership conference, and discounts on IoD training. Structured mentoring via Board members is also offered throughout the term.
Term and commencement date This is a two year term, ideally starting late-May to coincide with the IoD's AGM, held in Auckland on 29th May.
