Are you eager to land a brand new role? Our client, a busy Local Authority in West Yorkshire, are looking for an experienced Principal Engineer to join their team and play a crucial role within their highway development operations.        

Position: Principal Engineer
Rate: £40-60 per hour (Umbrella, Outside IR35)
Contract Duration: Temporary (November 2026) with Possible Extension  
Working Arrangement: Hybrid - 2 days in the office  

Job Purpose: 

• You will be involved in the procurement, planning, feasibility and financial and resource management of highway and structural projects ranging from minor works packages to large scale multi agency transportation schemes.

Job Responsibilities: 

• You will have experience of leading and managing the performance of site based workforce across planned, reactive, drainage and street lighting works, during our evening, night and flexible working models.
• Managing the delivery of a wide range of engineering projects on and adjacent to the highway, including managing the financial accounts.
• You will be expected to attend progress meetings, meetings with the public and local Councillors.

Job Requirements:

• Previous experience working within a local authority or a similar organisation.
• At least 1 year experience within a Principal Engineer role or equivalent.
• You will need experience of working within a Highways Engineering and Transport Planning environment, ideally with a background in Development Management or have gained similar experience as a Transport & Highways Consultant / Planner.
• The candidate is expected to hold a minimum of HNC / Degree in a relevant Transport Planning / Highways Engineering discipline.
• Chartered / Incorporated Engineer status or Membership of a relevant Institution would be beneficial.
• Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
