Duration: 3 Months 
Rate: £27.84 per hour

Purpose of the Role: 

As an experienced Youth Justice Officer, you will work within a multi-disciplinary Youth Offending Team, supporting vulnerable children and young people (aged 10–17) who come into contact with the youth justice system. The role involves working with young people, families, and carers to promote positive change, reduce re-offending, and support community safety.

You must hold a relevant professional qualification (Social Work, Probation, or equivalent) and have significant youth justice experience. You will manage cases involving Court Orders, custodial sentences, and Out of Court disposals. A thorough knowledge of youth justice, criminal law, and trauma-informed approaches is essential.


Key Responsibilities:

• Manage a caseload of young people on statutory Court Orders and Out of Court disposals.
• Complete assessments (AssetPlus, Systemic Assessments) and intervention plans in a timely manner.
• Write high-quality reports for Court, including Pre-Sentence Reports, and represent the Youth Offending Team in Court settings.
• Deliver youth justice interventions based on evidence, systemic practice, and trauma-informed approaches.
• Engage and work collaboratively with families and carers to promote positive outcomes for young people.
• Build and maintain effective working relationships with multi-agency partners (e.g., Police, Courts, Children’s Services).
• Operate within the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and other relevant criminal justice and child care legislation.
• Promote Child First principles — prioritising the child’s needs, strengths, and active participation in all interventions.
• Contribute to strategic youth justice priorities, particularly addressing disproportionality and supporting children's voices.
• Work flexibly across different settings, including courts, police custody, homes, placements, and community venues.
• Maintain accurate and timely case recording on the Youth Justice database and ensure GDPR compliance.
• Participate in the Youth Offending Team’s duty system, team meetings, and development activities.
• Undertake training to maintain knowledge of youth justice legislation, systemic practice, and emerging trends.

• Undertake other relevant duties as required by line management.

• Qualified Social Worker, Probation Officer, or other relevant professional qualification.
• Proven experience working within a Youth Offending Team or similar multi-agency youth justice environment.
• Strong knowledge of youth justice legislation, national standards, and statutory responsibilities.
• Experience of managing youth justice cases, including Court and Out of Court disposals.
• Knowledge of safeguarding practices and relevant childcare legislation.
• Skilled in producing high-quality assessments and reports, incorporating the voices of young people.
• Experience working in Court settings and across various environments such as custody, community, and home settings.
• Knowledge and application of Child First, trauma-informed, systemic, and strength-based approaches.
• Understanding of structural inequalities, disproportionality, discrimination, and cultural competence in working with young people.
• Ability to maintain effective partnerships and collaborate across services and agencies.
• Knowledge of GDPR, confidentiality, and information-sharing protocols.
