Are you eager to land a brand new role? Our client, a busy local authority in West Yorkshire, are looking for an experienced Highways Engineer to join their team and play a crucial role in their NRASWA operations.  

Position: Highways Engineer
Rate: £30-35 per hour (Umbrella, Inside IR35)
Contract Duration: Temporary (August 2025) with Possible Extension 
Working Pattern: 25% office based / 75% site based 

Purpose:

• The Street works Team within Network Management is responsible for the co-ordination of road and street works, the arrangement of road closures for works and events, and the inspection of works carried out under the Council’s Permit Scheme The Team also deals with communications regarding planned and un-planned incidents and emergencies that affect the highway, as well as the identification and reporting of defective apparatus and issuing of licences and consents for temporary highway obstructions such as skips and hoardings etc. that impact on the highway.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Monitoring and reporting on works on the highway by carrying out inspections under NRASWA, including inspection of works, reinstatements, and ironwork.
• Ensuring that all works promoters comply with signing, lighting and guarding requirements as required by Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual and ‘Safety at Street Works and Road Works: A code of practice’.
• Assisting with the co-ordination of works, events or incidents on the highway, and temporary obstructions, e.g., builder’s skips etc comply with safety legislation and licence conditions.

Job Requirements:

• Previous experience working within a local authority or a similar organisation.
• At least 1 year experience within a Highways Engineer role or equivalent.
• Level 2 Diploma or Level 3 NVQ Diploma in a Construction related area.
• NRASWA (New Roads and Street Works Act) Operative accreditation.
• Requirement to gain NRASWA (New Roads and Street Works Act) Supervisor accreditation within a specified period.
• Has the ability and confidence to assess what the risks are at unexpected incidents (obstructions, hazards) on the highway, to take control and manage the situation until support is available.
