Job Specification: Highway Maintenance Engineer
Location: Wandsworth & Richmond (Primarily Site-Based, Flexible Work Options Available)
Contract: Initial 3 Months (Potential Extension up to 1 Year)
Rate: £23.85 - £25.00 per hour (Dependent on Experience)

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Highway Maintenance Engineer to join our Highways Section within Engineering Group 2. This role is primarily site-based, overseeing the planning, supervision, and delivery of planned highway maintenance and improvement works, including carriageway and footway resurfacing/reconstruction. The role offers an opportunity to work with a dedicated team ensuring the safety, efficiency, and enhancement of highway infrastructure in Richmond and Wandsworth. This is a crucial position where your expertise in highways maintenance will have a significant impact on public infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and manage the delivery of planned highway maintenance programmes, including carriageway and footway resurfacing.
• Assess all types of highway defects and determine appropriate remedial actions.
• Plan, programme, and implement highway maintenance and improvement works.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including CDM regulations.
• Chair meetings and liaise with contractors, ensuring works are completed to required standards.
• Monitor and evaluate contractor performance and approve payment applications.
• Provide accurate reports on site inspections and work progress.
• Work collaboratively with other service providers to ensure integrated service delivery.
• Respond to emergency and planned works, which may occasionally require evening or weekend attendance.

Essential skills

• A qualified Highway Maintenance Engineer with extensive experience in the field.
• Strong site supervision skills with a proven background in contract management and delivery of highway maintenance projects.
• Knowledge of street works, permitting, and highway legislation.
• Experience in measuring, estimating, and agreeing on contractor payment applications.
• Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet tight deadlines.
• Strong communication skills, with confidence in engaging with stakeholders at all levels, including members of the public, contractors, council officers, and councillors.
• Proficiency in IT applications relevant to the role.
• A background in local government is desirable but not essential.
