Position: Specialist Regeneration and Major Projects Lawyer
Location: Merton
Hourly Rate: £40 p/hour
Start: ASAP
Hours: Monday - Friday / 9am - 5pm 
Duration: 4 months (Possible Extension)

Purpose of the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Specialist Regeneration and Major Projects Lawyer to join the Shared Legal Service, supporting the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames on high-profile regeneration and property projects. This role is ideal for a skilled legal professional with a background in commercial property, planning, or procurement law and a passion for delivering transformative projects.#

You will work directly with Kingston's General Counsel, Chief Executive, and elected members, providing expert legal advice and creative solutions for complex regeneration schemes. With oversight of internal and external legal advisers, you’ll ensure seamless service delivery, legal compliance, and governance across Kingston’s regeneration initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead legal adviser on Kingston’s regeneration and major property projects, including compulsory purchase orders.
• Represent Kingston’s General Counsel at internal governance boards, offering expert legal and governance advice.
• Act as Deputy Monitoring Officer and deputise for General Counsel as required.
• Manage and coordinate external legal advisers, ensuring their advice aligns with Kingston’s objectives.
• Handle a diverse caseload of complex legal matters, including drafting agreements, deeds, and notices, and representing Kingston in legal proceedings.
• Supervise and mentor a team of senior and assistant lawyers.
• Deliver innovative legal solutions to support Kingston’s service transformation and change initiatives.

About You

You are a qualified solicitor, barrister, or chartered legal executive with at least five years’ post-qualification experience (PQE) in local government law, particularly in property, regeneration, and planning. Your expertise, leadership, and ability to provide strategic legal advice at senior levels will drive Kingston’s ambitious regeneration agenda.

• Strong understanding of relevant legislation and governance processes.
• Demonstrated leadership in managing and motivating legal teams.
• Skilled at providing innovative, pragmatic solutions to complex legal challenges.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to build partnerships across councils and stakeholders.
• Politically astute with the gravitas to operate confidently at the highest levels.
