Role Overview:

This is a fantastic opportunity to join Bristol City Council’s Natural and Marine Environment Team in a lead Health and Safety role that delivers of some of Bristol’s most high-profile services. Including:

Cemeteries and Crematoria
Marine Harbour Operations
Docks Engineering
Formal Parks
Play areas
Nature reserves
Sports facilities
Leisure and catering facilities
Retail Plant Nursery


Key Responsibilities:

• Act as the lead Health and Safety officer for Natural and Marine Environment operations, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and internal standards.
• Collaborate with delivery teams, managers, and contractors to challenge and improve health and safety performance.
• Undertake audits and inspections of operational activities, contractors, and workplaces to verify compliance with legislative requirements.
• Implement and manage risk assessment methodologies, including calculation, reporting, and risk reduction strategies.
• Develop, deliver, and monitor a health, safety, and wellbeing compliance programme across a varied portfolio of services and operations.
• Provide expert advice and guidance to teams on health, safety, and wellbeing matters.
• Lead on incident investigations, identifying root causes and delivering actionable improvements to prevent reoccurrence.
• Support and contribute to major projects, ensuring that health and safety requirements are met from design to delivery.

Requirements:

What We Are Looking For We are seeking a motivated and passionate individual who is not daunted by working in a dynamic and developing service. The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

• Proven experience in a health and safety role with a working knowledge of operational health and safety legislation. Experience in Marine, operational engineering, or parks operations is highly desirable.
• The ability to work collaboratively with teams and managers as a critical friend, providing constructive challenges to staff and contractors to ensure high safety standards are maintained.
• Experience of undertaking audits and inspections to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and organisational requirements.
• Strong knowledge and experience in risk management methodologies, including calculation, reporting, and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
• Experience in devising and delivering health, safety, and wellbeing compliance programmes.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders.
• A proactive and solutions-focused mindset, committed to achieving continuous improvement in health, safety, and wellbeing.
