Current opportunity
The National Director - Quality and Risk is a newly created position responsible for implementing and monitoring the risk and compliance obligations of Nexia Australia network member firms, including those policies and procedures designed to ensure compliance with relevant professional and ethical standards.
Reporting to the National Chair and supporting the National Risk and Quality Management Committee, this critical leadership role will provide network-wide oversight and advice on risk management, governance, engagement quality, and monitoring and remediation activities.
You will work collaboratively with senior leaders, Risk Managers and teams nationwide to ensure best-practice standards are consistently applied and continuously improved.
The role
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced professional seeking a new challenge. The role encompasses a broad range of activities, including:
- Driving the national network’s compliance with relevant professional, regulatory and legislative requirements, providing guidance on regulatory change, and liaising with external regulators and industry bodies.
- Maintaining and improving Nexia Australia’s system of quality management, including overseeing and supporting local firms, developing and updating existing national templates and processes to support and enhance quality.
- Leading and coordinating Nexia Australia’s internal monitoring program across various divisions and service lines.
- Performing ethical and independence-related consultations under APES 110 and other professional standards and regulations.
- Maintaining oversight of compliance with relevant legislative requirements and other professional standards relating to risk, ethics and quality at the national network, including AML/CTF, whistleblowing obligations, and the tax agents Code of Professional Conduct.
- Assisting and supporting Nexia Australia member firms to enhance governance systems and structures to manage, identify, address and monitor risks, including, but not limited to ASQM 1, APES 320 and APES 325.
- Keeping Nexia Australia member firms up to date on relevant regulatory changes and proposed reforms, including their practical implications for Nexia Australia member firms, staff, and clients.
- Identifying, preparing and delivering relevant quality and risk presentations/training sessions (both in-person and online) for Partners and staff across Australia.
- Acting as a knowledgeable and trusted advisor, role model, and point of contact for any relevant risk and ethical matters.
- Work closely with the National Accounting and Audit Technical Director and National Tax Director to identify, manage and resolve quality and risk matters that affect their areas of responsibility.
About you
To be considered for this role, you should have a minimum of 10 years of experience in a professional services environment, ideally with an audit or risk management role. You will also have:
- A strong understanding of governance, risk and controls and the ability to think strategically and identify, manage, and mitigate firm risks effectively.
- Excellent knowledge of professional standards, including the Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (including Independence Standards), Australian Professional Ethical Standards and the Corporations Act 2001.
- Demonstrated experience in risk management and in designing, implementing and monitoring systems of quality management.
- A tertiary qualification and post-grad qualifications such as CA or recognised equivalent.
- The ability to communicate easily and build a rapport with all Partners and staff at different levels across the network.
- The ability to prepare and deliver effective presentations/training to Nexia Australia firms.

- Have the ability to work under pressure, autonomously, managing time and workflow effectively, and deliver within tight timeframes.
- Have the ability to remain on brief and adhere to strategic direction.
- Have a genuinely collaborative, team player orientation.
- Be a positive-minded person with a focus on adding value to the Nexia network, including all local firms.
