Rebuilding Shattered Lives – Supporting people of refugee background to recover from torture and other traumatic events Your Impact Community and Sector Capacity Building (CSCB) is an innovative program area designed to facilitate and support the development, growth, and empowerment of communities of refugee backgrounds to recover from pre-arrival trauma and resettle positively. CSCB teams work to strengthen these communities across Victoria, helping them to thrive.
The Ucan2 Group Facilitators run group work programs for young people from refugee backgrounds aged between 16 and 25 years. This includes the Ucan2 16-week group program, facilitated in partnership with the Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) within a range of educational institutions including English Language Schools and Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) classes at TAFEs, and shorter group programs focussed on employment and settlement outcomes, delivered in a range of education and community settings.
The Ucan2 Group Facilitators work in partnership with Ucan2 colleagues who lead work experience and mentoring programs for young people within the Ucan2 program. The Ucan2 Group Facilitator reports to the Ucan2 Program Coordinator.
The Role Reporting to the Ucan2 Program Coordinator, the Ucan 2 Group Facilitator will plan and facilitate allocated Ucan2 groups in collaboration with a site delivery team ensuring appropriate materials and content according to the Ucan2 Program Guide.
Key responsibilities include:
- Deliver the psycho-social group work component of Ucan2 to group participants and support the delivery of work skills and social connections components of Ucan2.
- Monitor and support Ucan2 participants in collaboration with delivery team ensuring relevant referrals are made as required.
- Identify and support participants in the Ucan2 program to undertake work experience.
- Liaise with Ucan2 colleagues and site staff to support the placement of individual program participants in work experience opportunities.
- Support participants to visit work experience sites and meet with relevant staff and supervisors.
- Monitor students on placement and provide support where required through site visits and phone calls.
- Liaise with Ucan2 colleagues to match participants and mentors and support participants to attend information sessions and meet-ups.
- Co-facilitate mentor program information sessions and meet-ups as required.
There are two roles, based in our Brunswick office (with travel to other sites) and available as full-time or part-time (0.8-1.0 EFT); one is available ongoing and one is a 12-month fixed term contract.
What you’ll need to successfully apply To be successful, you will need to positively respond to the below selection criteria:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in youth work, community development, social work, education or other equivalent qualification.
- Proven group facilitation skills, preferably with young people from Refugee background
- Demonstrated skills in using a strengths-based approach to engage and empower young people.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teaching professionals, program delivery partners and other key stakeholders.
- Project management skills, including the ability to work independently and within a team and manage competing demands and deadlines.
- Flexibility and adaptability in meeting program and team goals with high level verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of issues facing young people from asylum seeker and refugee backgrounds and their families, including the barriers they might face to accessing education and employment.
- Full Driver's License.
