Rebuilding Shattered Lives – Supporting people of refugee background to recover from torture and other traumatic events Your Impact The Mental Health and Wellbeing (MHW) Area of Foundation House delivers evidence-based best practice interventions that are trauma-informed and trauma-focused. Services are culturally safe and responsive to individuals and their families.
The Refugee Mental Health Clinic (RMHC) was established 25 years ago to address complex mental health presentations within refugee and asylum seeker client groups at Foundation House. All referrals to the Clinic are internal and with administrative support. The Clinic currently provides Medicare-billed psychiatric and specialist clinical services to clients of Foundation House who present with complex trauma. Services include psychiatric assessment, medication review and ongoing treatment. Currently the Clinic has three consultant psychiatrists – one for each region – and one registrar, provided each year by St. Vincents hospital.
The Clinic Coordinator role sits within the Mental Health & Wellbeing area, providing support by coordinating the Refugee Mental Health Clinic. The role will also hold a caseload of complex clients.
The Role The Clinic Coordinator will deliver effective and appropriate assessment, counselling and advocacy services to clients of VFST who are identified as having complex needs, and who are survivors of torture and other traumatic events. Working within the context of the VFST Integrated Trauma Recovery Model, the Clinic Coordinator will provide a wide range of interventions, at a high level of expertise, and contribute to delivering Mental Health & Wellbeing strategies, goals and work plans.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide leadership and support to Counsellor Advocates and the Regional Leadership team in the effective delivery of interventions and advocacy required to meet program and organisational goals.
- Provide guidance, advice and support to regional Counsellor Advocates in a specified area(s) of expertise, such as Mental Health, Children and Youth, Family-based work, Asylum Seekers, Advocacy, Professional Development.
- Support the Regional Leadership teams through being available as a senior clinician to support Counsellor Advocates with complex case advice.
- Coordinate the Mental Health Clinic across all regions and Head Office to ensure the delivery of high-quality mental health assistance to clients.
- Conduct comprehensive psycho-social assessments with individuals and families to formulate case plans within the Integrated Trauma Recovery Service Model.
- Provide high quality short, medium and long-term counselling interventions with clients utilising a range of therapeutic approaches to deliver agreed client and program outcomes.
- Undertake advocacy and liaison on behalf of clients with a range of relevant health, community, education and legal services to enable access to and use of those services.
Available is one full-time, ongoing position, based in our Brunswick office.
What you’ll need to successfully apply To be successful, you will need to positively respond to the below selection criteria:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, counselling or a related discipline.
- Ability to undertake intake assessments, comprehensive psychosocial assessments and risk assessments.
- High level of expertise in counselling skills for complex trauma.
- Cross cultural competencies including working with interpreters.
- Experience with advocating on behalf of refugees, asylum seekers, or other vulnerable clients regarding a range of issues related to health, welfare, legal and government.
- Experience of working with held and community detention asylum seeker clients.
- Preparation of reports for medical, legal and allied health professionals, other services and government bodies, and protection visa applications where required.
- Work experience as part of a multi-disciplinary team and previous engagement with human rights and social justice issues.
