Te whiwhinga mahi - The Opportunity
We are seeking two experienced and compassionate Kaiaarahi to join our Whakamomori Prevention and Postvention Service in full-time, permanent roles, working Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm, with flexibility required for occasional evening or weekend work to provide urgent postvention support when needed. These positions are based in Manukau and play a vital role in navigating and supporting whānau affected by whakamomori (suicide).
As a Kaiaarahi you will provide safe, timely and culturally responsive support across both prevention and postvention. You will walk alongside whānau, hapori and communities during times of distress, while also strengthening local capability to prevent future harm.
Working closely with individuals, whānau, community groups and partner organisations, you will:
- Coordinate and facilitate suicide prevention activities and local response plans
- Deliver suicide prevention education and training
- Provide postvention support and guidance following a loss, including:
- Awhi whānau and communities through the healing process
- Supporting whānau, communities, kaumātua and schools to navigate multiple service providers
- Managing media interfaces while ensuring privacy and compliance with court and coroner processes
- Identifying and mitigating social media risks
- Ensuring ongoing support around anniversaries and significant milestones
- Work collaboratively with existing suicide prevention and postvention networks and regional coordinators
- Build strong relationships and strengthen community resilience through education, wānanga and meaningful connection

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako – Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role, you will bring both heart and experience to this important mahi. You will have experience or lived experience in suicide prevention or postvention, or related fields such as mental health, addictions or social services, alongside strong cultural competence within Te Ao Māori and tikanga Māori frameworks.
You will be a confident and compassionate communicator, able to build trusted relationships with whānau, communities and partner agencies, and demonstrate empathy, resilience and sound judgement in complex or sensitive situations. Knowledge of Māori health promotion models such as
Te Whare Tapa Whā or
Te Pae Mahutonga is essential.
Training in ASIST, SafeTALK or Manaaki Ora is preferred but not essential. You will also have strong organisational and coordination skills, be comfortable with reporting and data systems, hold a full NZ Driver’s Licence, and have NZ residency or citizenship.
