Empower whānau on their cancer journey. Join Turuki as a Kaiarataki providing compassionate, kaupapa Māori navigation and support
Kaiarataki – Cancer Care Navigator
Turuki Health Care is a kaupapa Māori organisation delivering integrated health, wellbeing and social services across the Tāmaki Makaurau region. We provide quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare and support to whānau.
Te whiwhinga mahi – The Opportunity
Turuki Health Care is launching a new Cancer Care Coordination Service and we are seeking a compassionate, grounded, and skilled Kaiarataki to walk alongside whānau as they navigate the cancer continuum. This is one of two new roles grounded in mātauranga Māori, whakawhanaungatanga, and whānau-centred care.
As a Kaiarataki, you will be a trusted guide for whānau referred to our service. You will create meaningful hononga, support whānau to understand their diagnosis and treatment options, and ensure they can access the care they need with confidence and dignity. A key part of the role is strengthening the layers of awhi around patients by involving their wider whānau, reducing isolation and supporting better treatment completion and survivorship outcomes.
The Cancer Care Coordination Service provides a single point of contact across screening, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. This includes guidance, advocacy, needs assessment, and practical support such as transport, accommodation, and timely access to services throughout the cancer journey.
Ngā Kawenga Matua – Key Responsibilities
• Build strong, trust-based relationships with whānau through whakawhanaungatanga
• Support whānau to wānanga their diagnosis, treatment options, and care pathways
• Provide holistic care, including karakia and wairua-focused support
• Navigate whānau through screening, appointments, treatment, and survivorship
• Conduct needs assessments and connect whānau with suitable services and resources
• Promote immunisations and wider health promotion initiatives
• Advocate for whānau, ensuring their voices and choices are upheld
• Work collaboratively with internal teams, external providers, and community services
• Provide practical assistance such as transport coordination and accommodation support
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako – Skills and Experience
• Deep understanding of tikanga and mātauranga Māori
• Excellent communication, relationship-building, and advocacy skills
• Genuine empathy, compassion, and cultural sensitivity
• Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities
• Confidence working across health, community, and social service settings
• Emotional resilience to support whānau during challenging times
• Computer literacy and willingness to learn health information systems
• Experience in whānau-facing roles (e.g. kaiāwhina, navigator, social worker, community worker, health promoter)
• Experience supporting whānau with complex health or social needs
• Background in Māori health, community development, long-term conditions, mental health, or disability support is advantageous
• Experience with wraparound support, case coordination, or service navigation
• Experience working within kaupapa Māori environments
• Clinical or health service experience is beneficial but not essential
