Role: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer / Design Manager – Heat Pump & Renewable Heating Projects
Location: Gloucester
Salary: £65,000 – £80,000 + Package

We’re working with a growing engineering contractor delivering large-scale decarbonisation and renewable heating projects across the UK, and they are looking to appoint a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer or Design Manager with strong experience in heat pump systems.

This role will focus on the design and coordination of Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) systems across a range of projects including education, commercial, and public sector buildings.
It would suit a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer looking to step into a Design Manager role, or an experienced Design Manager with a background in building services and low-carbon heating technologies.

The Role

As part of the engineering and project delivery team, you will support the design, coordination, and technical development of low-carbon heating solutions from feasibility through to installation and commissioning.

You will work closely with project managers, consultants, and site teams to ensure systems are designed efficiently, meet regulatory requirements, and are delivered successfully on site.
Key responsibilities will include:

• Managing and coordinating the mechanical design of renewable heating systems, including ASHP and GSHP installations.
• Supporting projects from concept design, feasibility and technical assessments through to detailed design and construction support.
• Product and equipment selection, including specifying heat pumps, circulation pumps, buffer vessels, heat exchangers, pipework systems, valves, and associated plantroom equipment.
• Preparing and reviewing technical specifications, equipment schedules, and design calculations.
• Producing or reviewing schematics, plantroom layouts, and mechanical drawings.
• Ensuring systems are designed for efficiency, performance, and long-term operational reliability.
• Coordinating with electrical, controls/BMS, and civil design teams to ensure fully integrated MEP solutions.
• Working with suppliers and manufacturers to evaluate equipment options, system performance, and lead times.
• Providing technical guidance to project managers and site teams during installation.
• Supporting commissioning, testing, and system optimisation once installations are complete.
• Ensuring designs comply with UK Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance, and relevant industry standards.

Requirements: 

• Experience in mechanical building services design within construction or energy projects.
• Strong knowledge of heat pump systems (ASHP or GSHP) and low-carbon heating technologies.
• Background as a Mechanical Design Engineer, Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, or Design Manager.
• Experience designing or supporting delivery of plantrooms, heating distribution systems, and HVAC infrastructure.
• Experience with equipment specification and product selection for mechanical systems.
• Ability to coordinate design across multidisciplinary project teams.
• Experience delivering projects within sectors such as education, commercial, healthcare, or public sector buildings.

Desirable

• Degree, HNC, or HND in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
• Membership of CIBSE or a relevant professional body.
• Experience working on decarbonisation, retrofit, or renewable heating schemes.
• Knowledge of district heating or energy centre design.
