The Role
The Database Administrator operates on incidents, alerts and client projects as well as providing level 2 support to the VDBA Support team to support clients. A Database Administrator will monitor client database operational functions and statistics, report issues and potential impacts to the business and provide solutions to optimise performance.
Role Responsibilities
• Receiving and handling requests for support following agreed procedures.
• Responding to requests for support by providing information to enable incident resolution and promptly allocating unresolved calls as appropriate.
• Monitor and optimize performance by tracking resource usage (CPU, memory, I/O) with tools like Performance Monitor, Extended Events, and Azure Monitor, addressing slow-running queries with indexing and schema refinements, and leveraging Azure SQL Intelligent Insights for automated tuning.
• Develop and maintain backup and recovery processes, including full/differential/transaction log backups on-premises and point-in-time backups in Azure SQL, automating jobs with SQL Agent or Azure Automation, and regularly testing restore procedures to validate data integrity.
• Enforce security and compliance by configuring user access and permissions (least privilege model) and implementing encryption.
• Perform routine maintenance and capacity planning through index rebuilds/reorganizations, integrity checks (DBCC CHECKDB), monitoring data growth (DTUs, vCores), and automating tasks with SQL scripts, Azure Logic Apps, or Azure Automation.
• Diagnose and resolve database-related issues by investigating logs, performance bottlenecks, and application feedback, using Azure Monitor and Log Analytics for troubleshooting, and collaborating with other teams or escalating to Microsoft Support when needed.
• Coordinate and implement database changes by reviewing schema modifications, releases, and data migrations, assessing risks, creating rollback plans, adhering to change control processes.
• Provide guidance, documentation, and on-call support by advising stakeholders on design and best practices, maintaining clear records of configurations and procedures (including Azure resources), and participating in on-call rotations to address critical incidents.
Key Competencies• Minimum 7+ years’ experience in a MS SQL Support and / or delivery role
• Proven experience across multiple Microsoft SQL Server environments
• Data Analytics skills favourably considered
• Preferred experience in Microsoft SQL Server to Current Version
• Preferred Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification to MCSE or equivalent Level
• Azure Experience viewed favourably
• Previous experience in a similar support DBA role
• Able to assist and apply knowledge of Operating systems, data administration, data warehousing to assist with applications
• Strong client focus
• Strong communication skills to build and maintain positive relationships with team members and clients
• Ability to prioritise tasks, demonstrate initiative and meet deadlines
