About Bench Brewing:
Bench Brewing is an experiential craft brewery located in the world-renowned wine region of Niagara, Ontario. Surrounded by Ontario's finest agricultural land, our location provides the ideal setting for crafting great, approachable beers that reflect our local terroir.
The Bench Brewing campus sits across eight beautiful acres and features a 50hL brewing system, a tap and tasting room, a beer garden, a 'funk house' for our wild ale and barrel fermentation program, and our very own hops field. Our brewery is a place for our guests to relax, learn, and experience the craft of brewing beer.
The Role:
We are on the hunt for a dynamic Production Manager to lead our Brewing and Packaging teams into their next chapter! Reporting directly to the Director of Operations, you will be the driving force behind our daily success. This newly created role is truly unique because you get to bridge the gap between both sides of the floor—uniting and leading the crew across both the art of brewing and the fast-paced world of packaging. You'll get unmatched, hands-on experience navigating the exciting, collaborative environment of an innovative craft brewery, with a key seat at the table where your leadership directly shapes our growth.
Responsibilities
Brewing & Packaging Production Execution
- Own the Floor: You'll manage production across our full, diverse beverage portfolio—including beer, cider, RTDs, and non-alcoholic products.
- Keep Wheels Turning: Partner closely with Planning, Quality, and Supply Chain to seamlessly align our production schedules with sales demand and inventory targets.
- From Brewhouse to Cold Room: Oversee all brewing operations (brewhouse, juice receival, fermentation, dry-hopping, clarification, blending, pasteurization, and carbonation) to exact recipe specs.
- The Final Product: Supervise the entire packaging line, including canning, keg washing/filling, labelling, date coding, bundling, mix-packing, and palletizing.
- Never Compromise Quality: Ensure primary packaging hits our strict DO/TPO/$CO_2$ and fill level requirements, while keeping lot coding, regulatory records, and labels perfectly compliant.
- Grow & Smooth Out Operations: Support the integration of new products and contract/partner brands, while constantly driving waste reduction and throughput optimization.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead a Crew of 10: Supervise, mentor, and grow our core Brewing & Packaging team. You'll handle hiring, scheduling, and performance management.
- Build a Strong Foundation: Establish clear roles, accountability, and performance expectations so everyone knows what success looks like.
- Invest in Your People: Conduct regular 1-on-1s, team meetings, and formal reviews. You'll also design and deliver onboarding and ongoing skills training.
- Champion the Culture: Foster a workplace rooted in safety, quality ownership, and a desire to get better every day.
- Stay Agile: Manage workloads, cross-train team members, and bring in part-time support when needed to build maximum operational flexibility.
Equipment Maintenance
- Protect the Kit: Own the preventative maintenance program for all production gear, including brewhouse vessels, fermenters, brite beer tanks, centrifuge, pasteurizer, and packaging lines.
- Troubleshoot & Fix: Coordinate with maintenance staff and third-party contractors for both scheduled maintenance and unexpected repairs.
- Keep it Spotless: Maintain rigorous CIP (clean-in-place) and sanitation protocols across the entire facility.
- Operate Safely: Ensure all equipment runs within manufacturer specs and complies with all relevant codes.
- Think Big: Support the Director of Operations with capital projects to integrate new equipment, and handle the purchasing of daily small tools.
Quality Assurance & Food Safety
- Safety First: Ensure full compliance with food safety regulations and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), including HACCP principles.
- Solve Mysteries: Work hand-in-hand with the Lab Manager to investigate and fix any quality deviations, off-spec results, customer complaints, or product holds.
- Keep Perfect Records: Ensure teams maintain impeccable batch records, including in-process quality results.
- Bridge the Gap: Foster excellent, open communication and cooperation between the Brewing, Packaging, and Lab teams.
Safety & Compliance
- Keep the Team Safe: Ensure all production activities comply with health and safety legislation, regulatory requirements, and company safety policies.
- Be Proactive: Conduct regular safety inspections, hazard assessments, and incident investigations, and implement fast corrective actions.
- Enforce the Rules: Maintain and enforce vital safety programs like lockout/tagout, working at heights, chemical handling, and PPE requirements.
- Lead by Example: Act as an active Manager/Member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
Sustainability
- Watch the Water: Maintain a wastewater-to-beer ratio of 5:1 or less to hit our strict sustainability targets.
- Manage Resources: Coordinate daily water barn checks and liaise with Econse on ongoing issues and exciting new projects.
- Partner Up: Coordinate Tank B pick-ups and irrigation with our third-party partners.
- Build Green Habits: Ensure the team follows daily eco-practices, including side-streaming to totes, waste/recycling separation, and spent grain pickup.
- Innovate: Continuously find and pitch new ways to advance our brewery's sustainability program.
Operational Reporting
- Know the Numbers: Track and report on key production KPIs like batch yield, brewhouse efficiency, packaging line efficiency, waste percentages, and water usage.
- Optimize Everything: Use that data to implement continuous improvement initiatives that cut costs, boost throughput, and improve product consistency.
- Master the System: Maintain highly accurate production records within Odoo.
- Drive Tech Upgrades: Support the expansion of Manufacturing modules in Odoo, coaching the production team toward real-time data entry.
