Start Your Carpentry Career
1st Year Apprentice Carpenter | Central Coast NSW | Full-time
The Opportunity Like working outdoors, using tools and seeing what you’ve built at the end of the day?
CCGT is looking for a 1st Year Apprentice Carpenter to join a family-owned residential building company working across the Central Coast.
Our Host Employer specialises in architectural new build homes, giving you the chance to learn carpentry on quality residential projects from the ground up.
No previous carpentry experience is needed. You just need to be reliable, hands-on and ready to learn.
You will be employed by Central Coast Group Training (CCGT) and placed with the Host Employer for your day-to-day work. CCGT will support you throughout your apprenticeship while you complete a nationally recognised Certificate III in Carpentry. This is a full-time role, generally working 7:00am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday working across various sites on the Central Coast and Newcastle.
What You’ll Actually Be Doing Your first few months will focus on learning site safety, getting familiar with tools and materials, and helping experienced tradespeople with daily jobs.
As your skills grow, you’ll start learning how to:
- Assist with building new residential homes
- Construct, install, renovate and repair timber structures and fixtures
- Work with timber, plywood, lightweight steel, wallboard and other materials
- Help with site preparation and earthworks
- Use hand tools and power tools safely
- Measure, cut, carry and prepare building materials
- Follow plans, instructions and site processes
- Keep the worksite clean, safe and organised
You will not be expected to know everything on day one. The goal is to listen, ask questions and keep improving.
Why This Is a Good Place to Start You’ll be learning with a small residential building team that offers:
- Hands-on experience on architectural new build homes
- A close team environment where everyone gets involved
- Experienced tradespeople who can show you the trade
- A younger, down-to-earth crew
- A strong focus on doing things properly the first time
- Supportive supervision for apprentices who put in the effort
- Real site experience across different stages of residential construction
You’ll also receive paid full-time employment, uniform, on-the-job training and regular support from CCGT throughout your apprenticeship.
After your apprenticeship, career pathways may include Qualified Carpenter, Residential Builder, Leading Hand, Site Supervisor or Licensed Builder.
What We’re Looking For This role could suit you if you:
- Are genuinely interested in carpentry and residential building
- Turn up on time and are ready to learn
- Listen carefully and follow instructions, asking questions when unsure
- Working safely and respectfully within the team
- Enjoy hands-on, physical outdoor work
- Are reliable, keen and willing to give things a go
- Take pride in doing a job properly
- Have a White Card, or are willing to obtain one
- Have a manual driver’s licence - all work vehicles are manual
- Have your own vehicle
School projects, work experience, sport, volunteering, woodwork, hobbies, practical projects or helping family all count. Include anything that shows you are reliable, hands-on and willing to have a go.
Pay This is a paid, full-time apprenticeship. Current first-year apprentice rates are:
- $17.22 per hour, or approximately $654.35 per week for Under 21, not completed Year 12
- $18.69 per hour, or approximately $710.31 per week for Under 21, completed Year 12
Rates are before tax and based on 38 ordinary hours per week. Your exact rate will depend on the applicable apprenticeship classification and will be confirmed before an employment offer is made. Superannuation and any applicable overtime, penalty rates and allowances are paid in addition.
