Looking for a role where your leadership makes a real impact every day? Want to get off the tools a little—but not lose touch with the work you enjoy? Ōtorohanga District Council has a rare opportunity for a practical, people-focused leader to step into our new Team Leader Waters role.
This is a newly created position designed to bring more on-the-ground support to our experienced Water Operators, while giving you the chance to build your leadership experience in a council that values its people and community.
Why this role?
- Split your time between the field and the office
- Lead a small, dedicated team across water, wastewater and stormwater operations
- Be the go-to for day-to-day delivery, contractor coordination, and problem solving
- Step up when needed to cover for the Manager Waters
- Be part of a smaller council where your work is seen and valued—and where you’ll gain exposure to broader infrastructure projects and senior leadership
What we’re looking for:
You’ll have solid experience in the water industry—treatment, reticulation or both—and be ready for more responsibility. You’re someone who still enjoys hands-on work, but who’s ready to step into a role focused on leading people, coordinating jobs, and making smart decisions.
You're practical, calm under pressure, and you know how to bring out the best in your team. Safety is non-negotiable for you. And you're someone who takes pride in doing the job right—for your team, and for the community.
What you'll bring: - 5+ years in the water/wastewater industry, preferably local government
- Some experience in a supervisory or team lead role (or ready to step into it)
- Strong communication and planning skills
- Health and safety leadership in high-risk environments
- NZ water certification/diploma or relevant engineering qualification
What we offer: - $84,377 – $99,268 salary, depending on your experience
- Optional council vehicle for commuting (with salary sacrifice based on whether you’re outside of the district)
- $200 annual wellness benefit (flexible use for sport, medical or health needs)
- Retail discounts through EMA Connect (JB HiFi, Noel Leeming, Pita Pit, Dulux and more)
- Supportive, collaborative team and a great lifestyle in a close-knit rural district. This is an on-site position.
Ōtorohanga District Council is proud to be known as one of New Zealand’s best small councils. We're big enough to deliver, but small enough that you'll feel connected to the work and the people. Our values—
Be Kind, Be Innovative, Be Accountable—shape everything we do.
