Optical Buyer

A global organization is seeking an experienced Optical Buyer to lead the sourcing, merchandising, vendor management, and category strategy for eyewear and optical products. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially driven buying professional with strong optical industry knowledge, global supplier experience, and the ability to manage product quality, cost, inventory, compliance, and profitability across a high-volume retail environment.
The Optical Buyer will play a key role in strengthening the company’s optical category by building strong vendor partnerships, negotiating favorable terms, improving assortment strategy, supporting product availability, and ensuring the business remains competitive in a fast-changing market. The ideal candidate is analytical, organized, bilingual, and comfortable working cross-functionally with operations, replenishment, compliance, finance, and regional teams.
Responsibilities - Lead the global buying and merchandising strategy for eyewear, frames, lenses, optical accessories, and related optical categories.
- Develop and manage supplier relationships, including vendor negotiations, business reviews, cost analysis, terms, freight considerations, returns, and performance expectations.
- Evaluate market trends, product demand, pricing, quality, and competitive activity to support profitable category decisions.
- Partner with replenishment teams to review inventory levels, forecast demand, and recommend appropriate order quantities.
- Monitor sales performance, gross margin, inventory turns, out-of-stocks, and days of supply to support category profitability and inventory health.
- Collaborate with regional buying, operations, and leadership teams to optimize assortment, SKU strategy, promotional planning, and warehouse execution.
- Support vendor-funded promotional programs that enhance customer value and improve category performance.
- Ensure vendor agreements, product documentation, compliance requirements, and import/export information are accurate and current.
- Maintain accurate item data in internal systems, including pricing, dimensions, terms, category coding, and product specifications.
- Develop seasonal merchandising and communications calendars to support timely planning for key product cycles.
- Identify opportunities for private label development, new product introductions, and category innovation.
- Conduct structured vendor performance reviews and set measurable goals for quality, service, pricing, and commercial results.
- Review competitive pricing and market positioning to ensure the optical assortment remains attractive and value-driven.
- Partner with internal teams to resolve vendor invoice discrepancies, operational concerns, product issues, and workflow inefficiencies.
- Visit warehouse or retail locations as needed to evaluate execution, gather feedback, and assess product performance.
Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain, Merchandising, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in optical buying, eyewear procurement, category management, global sourcing, or merchandising.
- Strong experience with optical products, including frames, lenses, eyewear, optical accessories, and related vision-care categories.
- Proven ability to manage global suppliers and negotiate high-value vendor agreements.
- Strong understanding of product quality, regulatory expectations, documentation, and compliance requirements related to optical or healthcare-adjacent products.
- Experience with private label development, product lifecycle management, and assortment planning preferred.
- Licensed Dispensing Optician certification preferred, but not required.
- Advanced analytical skills with the ability to interpret sales data, inventory reports, market trends, costing, pricing, and financial performance.
- Strong math skills related to forecasting, margin analysis, cost evaluation, and inventory planning.
- Experience working in multinational retail, consumer health, optical, or healthcare product environments preferred.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills across cross-functional and multicultural teams.
- Bilingual English and Spanish proficiency strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, cloud-based systems, and enterprise platforms.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as business needs require.
