SEC is building an enterprising and dynamic team to accelerate Victoria’s transition to renewables and help achieve Victoria’s renewable energy target of 95% by 2035. We are working together for renewable, affordable, reliable energy for all Victorians.
Your role
As a Market Analyst in the Energy Markets Analytics team, you will deliver high-quality analysis and insights to inform critical long-term decision-making across the organisation. Leveraging your understanding of the Australian energy market, you will assess market trends, interpret complex modelling outputs, and generate actionable recommendations that support strategic initiatives. You will also play a key role in developing and enhancing analytical tools and systems that enable consistent, data-driven insights.
You bring hands-on experience with PLEXOS, ideally in short-term price forecasting, along with strong programming capability in Python, R, or SQL to support data processing and workflow automation. Your advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, combined with proficiency in tools such as Excel, Power BI, or Tableau, allow you to translate complex data into clear, meaningful insights. With strong communication skills and a collaborative, proactive approach, you engage effectively with stakeholders and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement in a fast-paced environment.
This role can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.
What you will do:
Core accountabilities include:
- Modelling & forecasting: Enhance SEC’s market modelling capabilities, including short-term probabilistic forecasts, long-term capacity expansion, and dispatch optimisation models. Improve integration, quality, and usability of outputs to support strategic decision-making.
- Scenario analysis: Contribute to developing energy transition scenarios by applying market expertise and judgement, and support documentation of assumptions and scenarios for stakeholder and Board endorsement.
- Project due diligence: Partner with internal teams and external advisors to assess prospective investments and support asset and contract valuations, contributing to analysis and reporting.
- Data management & visualisation: Improve the collection, organisation, analysis, and visualisation of market data from sources such as AEMO, ASX Energy Futures, and SEC systems.

Must Have: Your capabilities and areas of expertise that matter most for this role are:
- Hands-on experience with PLEXOS, ideally including short-term schedule price forecasting;
- Proficiency in programming languages to support data processing and workflow development, with preferences for Python, R and/or SQL;
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to collaboratively interpret data and modelling outputs and produce and distribute meaningful insights across the organisation;
- Numerical and computing skills to support the development of accessible analytical and reporting tools including Advanced Excel, PowerBI, and/or Tableau;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to explain complex technical details to non-technical stakeholders;
- Aligned to the SEC ways of working and cultural behaviours, with an unwavering customer focus, striving for continuous improvement, and demonstrating a proactive can-do, attitude in what is a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Highly Desirable: - Demonstrated knowledge and experience (1+ years) in the Australian energy market, particularly regarding the operation of wholesale markets, renewable energy assets, financial markets, and trading systems;
- Tertiary qualifications (honours or advanced desirable) in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Economics, Finance and/or another relevant specialisation;
- An appreciation of Victorian Government policy targets, initiatives, and goals.

SEC will also play an important role in helping Victorian households to reduce their energy bills and emissions by offering simple and effective solutions to help them switch to electric.
