The SEC is building an enterprising and dynamic team to accelerate Victoria’s transition to renewables and help achieve Victoria’s renewable energy target of 95% by 2035. We are working together for renewable, affordable, reliable energy for all Victorians.
Your role
This is a 18-month maximum term contract (12 months minimum)
As General Manager of Strategy and Performance, you’ll lead the strategy function to shape and deliver the SEC’s strategic plan, ensuring it drives meaningful outcomes across the organisation. Working in close partnership with business units, you’ll tackle complex challenges and identify opportunities for growth, bringing clear insight and a structured approach to decision-making. Your ability to embed strong processes and performance discipline will be key to lifting organisational capability and achieving sustained high performance.
This role can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.
What you will do:
Core accountabilities include:
- Strategic leadership – Provide expert advice on the SEC’s strategic direction to the CEO, executive and business units. This includes driving thought leadership on changes in the energy market and updating SEC’s corporate strategy as required.
- Translating strategy to delivery - Work alongside the executive team to translate SEC’s strategic plan to implementation as effectively as possible. This includes leading and improving organisational performance, planning and delivery processes and having oversight of organisation-wide interdependencies.
- Driving public impact programs – Lead programs of work around First Peoples self-determination and renewable energy sector workforce development, building external relationships and working with the organisation to embed these public purpose outcomes through its market-facing activities.
- People leadership – Oversee a diverse and high-performing team, fostering a positive culture, building capability and driving high standards of delivery.
- Strategic partnering – Collaborate with the business and key external stakeholders to become a trusted partner, to co-design plans, align priorities and enable delivery of strategic objectives.
Who you are:
Experiences and Skills: Must Have: Your capabilities and areas of expertise that matter most for this role are:
- Significant leadership experience in similar strategic roles, e.g., management consulting, or in-house strategy functions
- Demonstrable experience in leading organisational delivery of strategic plans
- Conceptual and analytical capability to problem solve in a methodical, accurate and timely manner
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrable experience in written and oral communication of insights and recommendations across various stakeholders and levels
- A track record of delivering outcomes in challenging and complex policy, regulatory and/or technical environments.
- Ability to proactively navigate ambiguity and uncertainty and adapt to changing circumstances.
Highly Desirable: - Understanding of the Australian energy markets, especially the NEM.
- Experience in energy market analysis to drive and effectively communicate specific/relevant/useful insights to inform decision making.
- Experience in First Peoples policy or engagement, or other forms of external stakeholder engagement.
- Experience in workforce development policy or programs.

The organisation is partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects – the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.
The SEC will also play an important role in helping Victorian households to reduce their energy bills and emissions by offering simple and effective solutions to help them switch to electric.
The energy transformation will create thousands of jobs. The SEC will play a role in attracting and training our future renewable energy workforce.
