The SEC is building an enterprising and dynamic team to accelerate Victoria's transition to renewables and help achieve Victoria's renewable energy target of 95% by 2035. We are working together for renewable, affordable, reliable energy for all Victorians.
Your role
As a Data Engineer, you'll play a critical role in keeping our data platform running smoothly while helping it evolve to meet the needs of the business. You'll provide hands-on operational support, ensuring data pipelines, integrations and platforms are reliable, secure and performance.
Working closely with business and technical stakeholders, you'll help translate evolving requirements into practical enhancements, continually improving the platform's capability and value. This is an opportunity to combine strong engineering fundamentals with real business impact.
This role can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.
This role is a 12-month fixed term contract.
What you will do: Core accountabilities include:
- Development: Design, develop, and maintain robust data ingestion pipelines to collect and process data from various sources across SEC landscape including SaaS applications and 3rd party sources.
- Operational Support: Support and manage the Azure Databricks data platform environment, ensuring optimal performance and reliability aligned to business SLAs.
- Monitoring & Alerting: Act as the central contact point for troubleshooting and resolve issues related to data ingestion and processing.
- Teamwork: Collaborate with market analytics, data analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver solutions that meet business needs.
- Continuous Improvement: Implement data quality checks and monitoring to optimize data workflows and processes for efficiency and scalability and ensure data integrity.
- Knowledge: Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and best practices in data engineering and cloud technologies.
Who you are: Experiences and Skills:
Must Have: - A bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Strong experience building and supporting data platforms within an Azure Databricks environment.
- Experience building and maintaining data ingestion pipelines from SaaS cloud applications.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Scala, or Java.
- Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts and ETL processes.
- Familiarity with data governance and security best practices.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Highly Desirable: - Certification in Azure Data Engineering or related fields.
- Experience within Energy & Utility industry.

The organisation is partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects - the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.
The SEC will also play an important role in helping Victorian households to reduce their energy bills and emissions by offering simple and effective solutions to help them switch to electric.
The energy transformation will create thousands of jobs. The SEC will play a role in attracting and training our future renewable energy workforce.
