Do work that makes a difference
The SEC is building an enterprising and dynamic team to accelerate Victoria's transition to renewables and help achieve Victoria's renewable energy target of 95% by 2035. We are working together for renewable, affordable, reliable energy for all Victorians.
Your role
Join SEC at a pivotal growth phase.
As a VPP Operations Engineer you will play a hands-on role in operating and scaling our demand management and Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs. This is where cutting-edge technology meets real-world impact - helping SEC and our customers unlock smarter, more flexible energy outcomes.
In this role, you'll be at the heart of day-to-day VPP operations, using SEC's advanced software and control systems to aggregate and dispatch a diverse fleet of distributed energy resources (DERs) - including batteries, solar PV, and controllable loads. You'll actively monitor performance, dispatch assets in real time, and ensure our VPP delivers against both customer and SEC objectives.
Beyond operations, you'll help shape the backbone of the program by supporting our technology architecture, developing technical documentation, and building the operational artefacts that enable scale, automation, and reliability.
This role can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.
What you will do:
- Operate and dispatch demand management and VPP events, ensuring safe, reliable performance across participating assets.
- Monitor VPP and fleet performance in real time and post-event, analysing results to resolve issues and improve outcomes.
- Identify and implement optimisation opportunities to enhance operational strategies and asset performance.
- Build and maintain dashboards and analytics (e.g. Power BI) to track performance, revenue and key operational KPIs.
- Own operational compliance and incident management, acting as the first point of contact for issues across assets, SLAs, and regulatory or market requirements.
- Create and maintain operational documentation and technical artefacts to support scalable, automated operations.
- Partner with trading, product, engineering and data teams to continuously improve program performance.
Who you are: Your capabilities and areas of expertise that matter most for this role are: - Proven understanding of DERs, demand management programs and Virtual Power Plant operations.
- Strong data analytical skills to identify trends and optimise operational performance.
- Ability to create, maintain, and communicate operational and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of Operational Technology network and communications systems and DER/VPP system interactions.
- Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills under pressure, interpersonal and communication skills to translate technical and operational requirements into actionable solutions.
Highly Desirable: - Tertiary qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, Energy Engineering, Science (or related field)
- Demonstrated experience operating and dispatching Distributed Energy Resources or Virtual Power Plant assets.
- Experience in using machine-learning models or other sophisticated analytics tools would be an advantage.
- Knowledge of cyber security best practices, particularly under SOCI Act, would be an advantage.

About us We have an exciting and ambitious road ahead with a focus on:
- Investing in renewable energy and storage projects that accelerate the transition and deliver commercial returns.
- Supporting households to go all electric to reduce their emissions and energy bills.
- Building the renewable energy workforce our energy transition requires.
The organisation is partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects - the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.
The SEC will also play an important role in helping Victorian households to reduce their energy bills and emissions by offering simple and effective solutions to help them switch to electric.
The energy transformation will create thousands of jobs. The SEC will play a role in attracting and training our future renewable energy workforce.
