Do work that makes a difference
The SEC is building an enterprising and dynamic team to accelerate Victoria's transition to renewables and help achieve Victoria's renewable energy target of 95% by 2035. We are working together for renewable, affordable, reliable energy for all Victorians.
Your role
As a Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Engineer you will play a key role in supporting SEC's Victorian Commercial and Industrial (C&I) customers' distributed energy projects and enable demand flexibility across the portfolio.
You will lead the modelling of customer sites, including behind-the-meter solar and battery system design, demand response, virtual power plant (VPP) integration modelling. The role will also conduct portfolio analysis to assess the financial and technical benefits of a broad range of distributed energy assets.
This role can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.
What you will do:
Technical Analysis and Modelling
- Evaluate system performance, load profiles, and integration potential with VPP platforms and/or other SEC Energy Solutions products.
- Develop and analyse models of behind-the-meter distributed energy systems, including solar PV, battery storage, and demand management assets.
Financial and commercial analysis - Conduct financial and emissions benefit analyses of proposed energy solutions.
- Work closely with finance on cashflow models and building portfolio views of DER asset classes across customer segments.
Concept Design and Feasibility Support - Support early-stage concept and preliminary designs for solar and battery installations at customer sites.
- Assist in sizing, configuration, and optimisation of DER systems for customer-centric technical and commercial outcomes, which should include network tariff optimisation.
- Prepare technical inputs for feasibility studies, business cases, customer proposals, and other approvals as necessary.
- Assist with preliminary connection enquiries and small system applications to DNSPs.
Customer Site Assessments - Assist in site assessments, data collection, and technical evaluation of customer facilities, including occasional site inspections.
- Contribute to identifying opportunities for load management, storage deployment, or renewable generation.
- Collaboration and Integration
- Work closely with engineers, modellers, and commercial analysts within SEC Victoria.
- Collaborate with external partners, customers, and vendors to support project development and delivery.
- Support preparation of technical documentation, presentations, and reports.
Continuous Improvement - Contribute to the development of analytical tools and modelling frameworks for DER, demand management and VPP analysis.
- Stay informed on emerging DER technologies, standards, regulations and market mechanisms.
Who you are: - Tertiary qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, or Energy Engineering (or related field).
- Strong knowledge of solar and battery system design, sizing, site suitability analysis and interconnection requirements, with SAA Accreditation (GCPV or GCSB) strongly preferred.
- Strong experience with modelling or simulation tools for distributed energy resources, energy metering data and energy market data (e.g., PVsyst, HOMER, NREL SAM, Helioscope, NearMaps, GridCog, Orkestra, and/or Python-based tools).
- Knowledge of energy markets price forecasting methods and tools, including VPP operation, or demand response mechanisms.
Highly Desirable: - Experience working with commercial or industrial energy customers in Victoria.
- Familiarity with Australian grid connection processes, standards, and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience with GIS, SCADA, or monitoring data analytics.

- Provides hybrid work arrangements, with around 3 days working in Melbourne or Morwell, with flexible work options to meet individual circumstances, providing greater choice and autonomy.
About us We have an exciting and ambitious road ahead with a focus on:
- Investing in renewable energy and storage projects that accelerate the transition and deliver commercial returns.
- Supporting households to go all electric to reduce their emissions and energy bills.
- Building the renewable energy workforce our energy transition requires.
The organisation is partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects - the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.
The SEC will also play an important role in helping Victorian households to reduce their energy bills and emissions by offering simple and effective solutions to help them switch to electric.
The energy transformation will create thousands of jobs. The SEC will play a role in attracting and training our future renewable energy workforce.
