Your role As an
Energy Market Analyst in the
Energy Markets Analytics team at the SEC, you will play a key role in delivering analysis, insights, and advice to support decision-making across the organisation’s market-facing functions, including wholesale market operations and energy retailing. You’ll apply your deep market knowledge and critical thinking to analyse trends within the Australian energy landscape, providing valuable insights that shape our strategic direction. You will also contribute to the development of robust tools and systems that deliver data-driven insights to support initiatives across the organisation.
This role can be based in either our
Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in
Morwell.
What you will do: - Modelling and forecasting development – Support the development and continuous improvement of the SEC’s market modelling and forecasting capabilities, including short-term probabilistic forecasts, long-term market capacity expansion models and asset dispatch optimisation models.
- Data collation, management, reporting and visualisation – Work with the team to improve the organisation, interpretation and presentation of market data from various sources, including the AEMO Market Management System, ASX Energy Futures and the SEC’s Enterprise Trading and Risk Management system.
- Project due diligence – Work with relevant internal stakeholders and external advisors to conduct due diligence on prospective investments and inform regular valuations of existing assets & contracts, and contribute to the team’s reporting and presentation of analysis and insights.
- Scenario planning and analysis – Support the team in the development of a range of alternative views of the energy transition pathway, through the collation of expert energy market knowledge and exercising professional judgement. Assist with documenting in-house baseline assumptions and scenarios for presentation for endorsement by internal stakeholders and/or the SEC Board.
Who you are: Must Have: Your capabilities and areas of expertise that matter most for this role are:
- Tertiary qualifications in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Economics, Finance, or a related field (Honours/Advanced qualifications desirable).
- 3+ years’ experience in the Australian energy market, with exposure to wholesale markets, renewable energy, energy retailing, financial markets, or trading systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and models to generate actionable insights.
- Proficient in data processing and workflow development using Python, R, SQL, or similar programming languages.
- Skilled in developing analytical and reporting tools using Advanced Excel, PowerBI, and/or Tableau.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders and thrive in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.
Highly Desirable: - Experience using Plexos for market modelling and analysis.
- Understanding of Victorian Government energy policies, targets, and strategic initiatives.
