Your role As
Physical Markets Manager at the SEC, you will set up, oversee and lead spot market operations for a growing portfolio of projects that will include BESS, renewable generation and hybrid. You will be responsible for optimized trading of assets in compliance with the NER and other regulatory standards by developing and implementing the spot trading strategy and operating model to manage bidding and dispatch of assets utilising third-party autobidding software and a 24/7 trading room service.
The role will also manage spot market exposure of the SEC wholesale portfolio that includes C&I customer load with demand response, financial hedges and offtake contracts. You will be subject matter expert on physical market, data and trading of assets and inform internal stakeholders around risk parameters and new project investments. The role requires leadership skills as over time will involve building and leading a high-performing team that will own and manage the SEC’s physical market strategy and day-to-day market operations.
This is an exciting challenge and opportunity for someone with extensive spot market experience and passion for analyzing markets to build and continuously improve performance of a spot market function.
This role can be based in either our
Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in
Morwell.
What you will do: - Strategy Development- shared accountability with GM Trading to develop and implement short-term physical trading strategies, plans and analysis of options to optimize SEC’s overall energy portfolio.
- Spot market operating model – lead implementation of an automated bidding system and 24/7 market trading room provider and develop the operating model for 24/7 oversight of the short-term physical trading including risk management, market compliance, and transaction verification. Manage oversight of the autobidder with capability and confidence to adjust or override the autobidder as needed in response to real-time market changes including price changes resulting from electricity network constraints
- Innovation and Process Improvement – Continuously evaluate operational processes and asset performance, adjusting trading strategies where necessary to implement improvement. Stay abreast of industry trends and technological advancements to keep the company at the forefront of the renewable energy market.
- Compliant energy market operational processes – Lead the AEMO registration application processes for the company’s portfolio of generation and storage assets and ensure all market operations are compliant to regulations including managing any relevant environmental scheme benefits or liability.
- Stakeholder Engagement - Maintain relationships with key industry stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, market operators, metering service providers (for which the role will be the company’s primary responsible person), project owners and other energy sector entities.
- Data Analysis and Reporting – Oversee the analysis of market data to forecast trends, evaluate performance metrics, and prepare detailed reports on market operations. Utilize data insights to propose actionable strategies for enhancing operational efficiency and profitability. Prepare and present reports on physical markets and asset performance suitable for a wide range of internal audience.
- IT Interface – Work with SEC’s IT team to implement appropriate interfaces between relevant market and project data sources and SEC’s ETRM, auto-bidder and other systems. This would include relevant AEMO data and project SCADA data.
Who you are: Must Have: Your capabilities and areas of expertise that matter most for this role are:
- Deep understanding of energy market operating processes: Demonstrable experience working end to end across physical energy market operational processes in the NEM. Including understanding of bidding and dispatch of scheduled and semi-scheduled generators, regional price dynamics, constraint equations and network outages.
- Demonstrable experience leading market operations function: Greater than 3 years’ experience in an operational leadership or senior role including experience working with outsource partners to deliver against operational performance targets.
- Strong stakeholder management and interpersonal skills: Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners to collaborate and work in an agile and ever-changing start-up environment.
- Alignment to the SEC ways of working and cultural behaviours: unwavering customer focus, striving for continuous improvement, and demonstrating a proactive can-do, attitude in what is a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Problem solving skills: Excellent problem-solving skills, a proactive and structured approach to identifying and resolving problems for SEC and for our customers.
Highly Desirable: - Greater than 5 years working for an Australian energy generator with at least 3 years relevant experience with renewable energy generation and/or energy storage technologies.
- Agile project delivery experience ideally as a product owner, project manager or business owner.
- Experience with automated bidding systems for electricity generation and/or batteries in the NEM
- A detailed level of understanding of AEMO’s MMS systems and generation SCADA systems relevant to physical trading, including knowledge of SQL queries
- Understanding and experience in operationalization of structured battery storage contracts, e.g. virtual toll agreement.
- Experience identifying, scoping and delivering process optimisation opportunities including articulation of business case for change
- Understanding of environmental schemes in relation to physical asset benefit or liability
- Australian retail energy market knowledge: Strong understanding of AEMO procedures, the Victorian regulatory landscape and breadth of retail industry market knowledge.
