Your role As
Senior Energy Trader , you will be responsible for leading the execution of the short to medium term contracts trading strategy across electricity derivatives and environmental products. The role will support implementation of the Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) system to ensure appropriate functionality for deal capture and monitoring. You will work closely alongside others in the Trading team covering the spot market and long-term energy strategy to form a holistic view and management of the wholesale portfolio across contracts, generation and customer load. The role also supports the Customer team through the efficient transfer pricing and execution of structured retail products.
The focus of this role will be on executing all short to medium trades required to hedge the wholesale position to ensure full compliance to SEC risk policy and in line with the agreed trading strategy, regulatory schemes and customer voluntary demand. It will also develop a smooth operating process to support customer structured products. Key to the role will be establishing and onboarding new trading relationships, including negotiation and execution of appropriate legal contracts with counterparties across electricity and environmental markets. The role will also implement market data and analysis to support short to medium term trading decisions and produce market reports for internal reporting purposes
This role can be based in Melbourne or Morwell. What you will do: Core accountabilities include:
- Strategy development – provide input into the development of the short to medium term wholesale energy hedge strategy to effectively manage market risk whilst supporting retail customer growth.
- Trading execution – execute the hedge strategy in compliance with approved risk policy and limits and market rules and conventions. This includes optimizing timing and product selection.
- Trading relationships – establish and manage relationships with existing key wholesale trading counterparties and market brokers, and onboard new ones including negotiation of ISDA and other commercial agreements.
- Internal collaboration – build and nurture a positive and collaborative working relationship with key internal stakeholders including Customer, Market Risk, Finance, Legal, Procurement, Assets and IT.
- External stakeholders – build and maintain relationships with key industry stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, market operators and regulators and industry bodies.
- Market insight and analysis – keep abreast of market development and intel across the NEM forward and spot markets as well as relevant environmental markets. Work with the Analytics team to build appropriate market analysis to support trading decisions.
- Support Customer business – support the growth of our Customer business through smooth implementation and operation of structured and value add retail products to government and C&I customers. Support transfer pricing to customers that balances appropriate risk management and competitiveness.
- Deployment of ETRM system – become Front Office lead in supporting the implementation and operation of the company’s ETRM system.
Who you are: Must Have: Your capabilities and areas of expertise that matter most for this role are:
- Deep understanding of electricity derivatives and environmental markets in Australia with at least 5 years of experience in contracts trading in the NEM and environmental products, specifically LGC, STC and VEEC.
- Sound understanding of spot electricity market dynamics and how they affect forward markets.
- Extensive network of contracts across markets in the NEM and environmental markets including trading counterparties and wholesale market brokers.
- Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills with ability to build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners to collaborate and work in an agile and ever-changing start-up environment.
- Alignment to the SEC ways of working and cultural behaviours: unwavering customer focus, striving for continuous improvement, and demonstrating a proactive can-do, attitude in what is a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Problem solving skills: Excellent problem-solving skills, a proactive and structured approach to identifying and resolving problems for SEC and for our customers.
Highly Desirable - Experience in supporting C&I retail customers and value add structured products.
- Understanding or exposure to renewable generation and storage assets and renewable energy offering to retail customers.
