As the statutory auditor of every public organisation, the Auditor-General provides independent assurance about how public money is spent and how effectively public organisations perform.

Niche Recruitment is proud to partner with The Audit Office to recruit both an Inquiries Specialist and a Senior Inquiries Specialist to join its highly regarded Inquiries team.

These are unique opportunities to contribute to work that matters. The Inquiries team undertakes independent investigations and reviews on behalf of the Auditor-General, examining matters of public interest where concerns have been raised about the use of public resources, decision-making, accountability, or performance.

The work is varied, intellectually challenging, and often high-profile, providing a rare opportunity to influence improvements across New Zealand's public sector.

About the role

As an Inquiries Specialist or Senior Inquiries Specialist, you will:

• Assess complaints and concerns to determine whether an inquiry is warranted.
• Gather, analyse, and evaluate information and evidence.
• Prepare detailed reports and briefings.
• Engage with stakeholders across the public sector, including Ministers of Parliament, MPs, mayors, local authority members, and chief executives.
• Investigate complex issues relating to public sector accountability, performance, and stewardship.

In addition, the Senior Inquiries Specialist will:

• Lead and manage larger and more complex inquiry projects.
• Provide guidance and support to other members of the team.
• Help shape inquiry approaches and contribute to team capability.

About you

You will be naturally curious, analytical, and able to work through complex issues with sound judgement and attention to detail. You'll be comfortable dealing with ambiguity, engaging with a broad range of stakeholders, and communicating findings clearly and objectively.

For the Inquiries Specialist role, we're interested in candidates with up to four years' relevant professional experience.

For the Senior Inquiries Specialist role, we're seeking candidates with seven or more years' relevant experience and demonstrated capability leading complex investigations, reviews, or inquiry work.

You will ideally bring:

• A tertiary qualification in law, accounting, public policy, commerce, or another relevant discipline.
• An understanding of the public sector environment and accountability frameworks.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Experience gathering and assessing evidence.
• Excellent written communication and report-writing ability.
• Sound judgement, integrity, and professionalism.
