Strategic Communications & Engagement Leader

Fixed-term to February 2027 | Wellington

We're partnering with a large, nationally significant public sector organisation seeking an experienced Communications and Engagement leader to step into a key fixed-term leadership role.

You'll lead a national Communications and Engagement function and provide trusted advice to executive leaders on complex, high-profile and often sensitive matters. You'll oversee a broad portfolio spanning strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, internal communications, media and reputation management, while leading a capable team delivering work that has genuine impact across New Zealand.

This is a role for someone who enjoys complexity, can quickly build credibility, and is comfortable operating at both a strategic and organisational level.

This role will particularly suit someone who has successfully led teams through complexity, organisational change and periods of uncertainty.

We're interested in speaking with senior communications and engagement leaders who bring:

• Experience leading communications and engagement functions within large, complex organisations
• Strong executive advisory experience, including working alongside senior leaders and governance stakeholders
• A track record of leading teams through change, or transformation
• Well-developed political nous and sound judgement
• Experience managing reputation, stakeholder relationships and high-profile issues
• The ability to balance strategic priorities with operational realities
• Strong people leadership skills and a genuine commitment to building high-performing teams
