Tax Accountant | Business Services
Salary: $70,000 to $85,000 + superannuation
Location: Cairns CBD, Far North Queensland

This position combines hands-on preparation work with client communication and opportunities to contribute to tax planning. Experienced team leaders provide technical guidance, review your work, and help address knowledge gaps.
Dedicated support staff assist with client files, correspondence and ATO administration, allowing accountants to focus on accounting work. Established workpapers and processes provide structure as your responsibilities grow.
About Our Client
Our client is an independent, family-run accounting and advisory firm with offices in Cairns and Innisfail and around 25 staff.
Services span accounting, taxation, business advisory, superannuation, payroll and bookkeeping. Three tax teams work alongside specialist superannuation and business advisory teams, with work delivered locally.
The client base spans tourism, retail, construction, trades, mining, and agriculture. Engagements range from smaller businesses to high-net-worth family groups and complex multi-entity structures, including clients requiring general-purpose financial reporting.

The Role
Work within a tax team delivering accounting and business services for a varied client portfolio.
Responsibilities include:
- Preparing financial statements and income tax returns for individuals, partnerships, companies and trusts
- Preparing BAS and related compliance work
- Completing reconciliations and detailed supporting workpapers
- Communicating with clients to obtain information and resolve queries
- Supporting tax planning, including trust distributions and company tax matters
- Researching technical issues and discussing findings with your team leader
- Assisting with more complex financial reporting and client structures as your capability develops
- Working across client accounting systems, including MYOB and Xero
- Managing allocated jobs, deadlines and progress updates
- Collaborating with support staff and senior accountants to deliver accurate, timely work
What You’ll Bring - At least three years of Australian public practice experience in tax and business services
- Experience preparing financial statements and income tax returns
- Sound knowledge of Australian accounting and taxation fundamentals
- Working knowledge of MYOB and Xero
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and an organised approach to deadlines
- Confidence asking questions, responding to feedback and learning new technical areas
- A professional, approachable manner with clients and colleagues
CA or CPA studies are encouraged, but completion is not essential to join.
