We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Payroll Manager to join a prestigious independent school in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. 

This person will work closely with Finance and HR to ensure a seamless payroll function for the school. With one direct report, you will oversee the fortnightly payroll for up to 700 permanent and casual staff.

The ideal candidate will bring experience in the independent school sector, a strong understanding of CMEA and the complexities of school payroll, and a customer-focused approach. You will be empathetic, collaborative, and able to build strong relationships across the school community, while driving improvements through efficient systems and processes. A willingness to embrace change and innovate is essential.

The role:

• Manage end-to-end fortnightly payroll for up to 700 permanent and casual staff.
• Interpret complex awards and legislation, including CMEA, the Fair Work Act, and NES.
• Maintain accurate payroll and employee records.
• Oversee superannuation, taxation, salary packaging, and other entitlements.
• Provide payroll reporting and analysis to support HR and Finance.
• Respond promptly and professionally to payroll enquiries.
• Liaise with external bodies, including the ATO, super funds, and auditors.
• Drive process improvements and contribute to payroll systems development.
• Support audits and ensure year-end payroll compliance.

The ideal candidate:

• Payroll experience in the independent school or education sector (preferred).
• Proficiency in payroll systems such as Micropay Meridian, ConnX, and ELMO.
• Knowledge of the CMEA Award, Fair Work Act, and NES (preferred).
• Strong organisational, time management, and analytical skills.
• Collaborative and relationship-focused.
• High attention to detail, accuracy, and confidentiality.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Professional, ethical, and committed to continuous improvement.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Working with Children Check clearance and rights to work in Australia.
