About the Role
The Medical Director, Innovative Medicines is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and executing a best-in-class Medical Affairs strategy across Australia and New Zealand within a global, innovation-led pharmaceutical environment. The role ensures scientific excellence, strong medical governance, and compliance, while driving the strategic direction of the innovative medicines portfolio to improve patient outcomes.
As a key member of the leadership team, you will provide expert medical input into evidence generation, lifecycle management, and portfolio strategy, translating complex clinical data into actionable insights. Partnering closely with Commercial, Regulatory, and Market Access, you will deliver aligned, cross-functional initiatives that support successful product launches and optimise patient access.
You will lead a high-performing team of Medical Science Liaisons, enabling credible scientific exchange with healthcare professionals and key opinion leaders, while building trusted external partnerships. Acting as a senior ambassador, you will engage with clinicians, regulators, and the broader medical community to advance clinical practice and support access to innovative therapies.
Role & Responsibilities
- Lead and execute the Medical Affairs strategy to support the launch and lifecycle of innovative medicines, aligned to global and regional priorities.
- Provide scientific leadership across cross-functional teams, ensuring medical insights shape brand strategy, clinical development, and market access.
- Build and deliver a high-impact scientific engagement strategy, strengthening relationships with key opinion leaders, investigators, and external experts.
- Lead and develop a high-performing Medical Science Liaison team, driving credible, compliant scientific exchange and actionable insights.
- Drive evidence generation initiatives, including real-world evidence and investigator-led studies, to address data gaps and inform clinical practice.
- Ensure the highest standards of medical governance, compliance, and ethical conduct across all medical activities.
Skills & Requirements - 10+ years’ experience within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry, including 5–7+ years in Medical Affairs roles (e.g. MSL, Medical Advisor, Associate Director) within a global, innovation-led environment.
- Proven leadership experience (3+ years) managing field medical teams and/or leading cross-functional initiatives, with the ability to build and develop high-performing, strategically aligned teams.
- Demonstrated success in product launch and lifecycle management, including pre-launch planning, evidence strategy development, and post-marketing activities across innovative therapies.
- Strong track record of scientific engagement, with hands-on experience partnering with KOLs and external experts at a regional and/or global level to generate insights and drive strategic impact.
- Experience leading evidence generation initiatives, including real-world evidence (RWE), investigator-initiated studies (IIS), and publication planning, with delivery of high-quality scientific outputs.
- Established cross-functional collaboration capabilities, working closely with Commercial, Regulatory, Market Access, and Clinical Development teams to inform brand strategy and optimise outcomes.
- Deep understanding of medical governance and compliance within highly regulated environments, including pharmacovigilance and industry codes of practice.
- Strong operational and business acumen, including experience managing Medical Affairs budgets, external vendors, and performance metrics.
- Global or regional Medical Affairs experience preferred, with the ability to align local execution to broader corporate and global strategies.
