About the role:
IPA is looking for a passionate and strategic Category Manager to join our Merchandise team and play a key role in shaping the future of community pharmacy across Australia.
At Independent Pharmacies of Australia (IPA), our purpose is to support independence, unify pharmacy, and empower our members to thrive so they can make a meaningful impact in their communities. As a Category Manager, you’ll lead the development and execution of category strategies that drive sales growth, strengthen supplier partnerships, and enhance the customer experience for our nationwide network.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute strategic category plans that drive sales growth, profitability, and member satisfaction.
- Lead pricing, promotion, and product assortment strategies to enhance competitiveness across community pharmacies.
- Build and manage strong relationships with suppliers and wholesalers, including leading negotiations and contracts.
- Develop Joint Business Plans and conduct quarterly, yearly, and planning meetings with key suppliers.
- Monitor category performance using data-driven insights and adjust strategies to meet financial and strategic targets.
- Drive supplier income through promotional initiatives and collaborate closely with the marketing team to maximise opportunities.
- Oversee retail pricing to ensure competitiveness and maintain strong category margins, including new product development.
- Manage inventory levels, discontinued lines, and stock allocation in partnership with the Demand Planner.
- Lead, mentor, and support the Category Assistant, fostering a culture of growth, innovation, and accountability.
- Uphold and promote health, safety, and wellbeing practices in line with IPA policies and organisational values.
Skills & Experience: - 5–8+ years’ experience in category management, procurement, merchandising, or a related commercial role.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Supply Chain, or a related discipline.
- Strong negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to build and manage supplier relationships.
- Excellent financial acumen with experience analysing category performance, sales data, pricing, and margins.
- Proven ability to develop and execute category strategies that drive growth and profitability.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
- Competence in collaborative cross-functional work, particularly with marketing, finance, and operations teams.
- Experienced in using data and insights to make strategic decisions and identify opportunities.
- Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Demonstrated leadership capability with experience mentoring or managing team members.
