About the location
Home to the Bunuba, Walmajarri, Wangkatjungka, Gooniyandi and Nyikina peoples, Fitzroy Crossing is a small, isolated town on the Fitzroy River in Kimberley. It came into existence because it was a suitable place to cross the massive Fitzroy River, which could travel for weeks during the wet season.
It is now a predominantly Aboriginal settlement on the banks of the Fitzroy River.
Things to do
Just 18 km northeast of the town is Geikie Gorge, National Park. About 350 million years ago, a barrier reef developed during the Devonian Period. The Belle Gorge is also the most famous gorges in the Kimberley, with its stunning waterfall, bushwalking, and birdwatching lies within the Kimberley's rugged Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges Conservation Park.
How to get there
Flights are available from all major Australian cities via Darwin, Broome and Perth.
