Application Modernization Engineer
Location: Remote, USA


Overview We are seeking a highly skilled Application Modernization Engineer to lead a large-scale migration effort from AIX to Linux and transition critical middleware from WebSphere Application Server (WAS) to JBoss Web Server (JWS). This position is pivotal in advancing the Bank’s modernization roadmap by improving performance, scalability, and operational efficiency of enterprise banking applications.
The ideal candidate has deep experience in AIX/Linux system administration, middleware configuration, and Java/J2EE application deployment, with a proven record of success in modernization or re-platforming initiatives.
Key Responsibilities

• Lead and execute end-to-end migration of applications from AIX to Linux environments.
• Plan and implement the transition from WebSphere Application Server to JBoss Web Server.
• Perform application dependency analysis to ensure seamless migration and integration.
• Translate and refactor configuration files, startup scripts, and deployment artifacts.
• Conduct performance tuning, load testing, and regression testing post-migration.
• Configure SSL/TLS, audit logging, and permissions management across environments.
• Collaborate with infrastructure, DevOps, and security teams to ensure compliance and reliability.
• Develop comprehensive migration documentation, runbooks, and post-mortem analyses.
• Identify opportunities to automate through Ansible, Jenkins, or Terraform.

Required Skills

• Operating Systems: AIX Administration, Linux System Administration
• Middleware & Application Servers: WebSphere Application Server configuration, JBoss Web Server setup, Java/J2EE deployment
• Scripting & Automation: Shell scripting, configuration file translation, filesystem management
• Migration & Testing: Application migration planning, data migration techniques, regression and load testing
• Security & Compliance: SSL/TLS configuration, audit/logging setup, user/group and permissions management
• Performance & Monitoring: Performance tuning, monitoring tools (e.g., Splunk, Dynatrace, AppDynamics)

Preferred Skills

• Cloud technologies (AWS, Azure)
• DevOps tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, CI/CD pipelines)
• Containerization (Docker, Podman, OpenShift)
• Infrastructure automation (Ansible, Terraform)
• Virtualization (VMware)

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in system administration and middleware management.
• Proven success in AIX-to-Linux and WAS-to-JWS migration projects.
• Strong understanding of Java-based applications and enterprise system integration.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
