Health & Safety Specialist - Risk & Safety Systems
Award-Winning Independent Multidisciplinary Property & Construction Consultancy
Sheffield | Hybrid Working
Competitive Salary + Excellent Benefits
Permanent | Full-Time
Tempest Jones is supporting a leading multidisciplinary consultancy with the appointment of a Health & Safety Risk Assessment & Safe Systems Specialist to work closely with engineering and manufacturing operations in Sheffield.
This is a hands-on Health & Safety role focused on improving how operational risks are assessed, documented and communicated across a complex working environment.
You will work directly with operators, supervisors, engineers, maintenance teams and technical specialists, helping capture how activities are actually carried out, identify the associated risks and translate that knowledge into practical Risk Assessments, Safe Working Procedures and engaging training materials.
Importantly, you do not necessarily need an extensive background within heavy engineering. The business is prepared to invest in your development and provide the support required to build your knowledge within a heavy engineering and manufacturing environment.
The Opportunity
This role will take ownership of the end-to-end development and review of operational Risk Assessments and Safe Working Procedures across engineering and manufacturing activities.
Rather than simply producing documentation from behind a desk, you will spend significant time engaging with the people carrying out the work, facilitating structured workshops and understanding operational processes first-hand.
You will help challenge existing assumptions, identify appropriate controls and ensure that the resulting documentation reflects both legislative requirements and the practical realities of the working environment.
Once controls and procedures have been agreed, you will also help turn detailed technical information into concise, accessible material that can be used effectively by teams on the shop floor.
The Role
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and facilitating operational Risk Assessment workshops with operators, supervisors, engineers, maintenance teams and subject matter experts.
- Identifying hazards, existing controls and opportunities to improve working practices.
- Challenging assumptions and ensuring Risk Assessments are practical, proportionate and robust.
- Producing clear and comprehensive Risk Assessment documentation following workshop sessions.
- Facilitating review meetings with operational teams and incorporating feedback into final documentation.
- Managing the review, version control and formal approval process.
- Developing detailed Safe Working Procedures in partnership with operational teams.
- Ensuring procedures accurately reflect agreed controls and the way activities are undertaken in practice.
- Producing concise, pictorial summaries of Safe Working Procedures for use within operational areas.
- Developing visual safety communications and training material.
- Supporting the creation of animated training content based around approved Safe Working Procedures.
- Building strong relationships across production, engineering, maintenance and management teams.
- Encouraging operational ownership of risk controls and safe systems of work.
About You We are interested in speaking with Health & Safety professionals who combine strong technical knowledge with the ability to engage effectively with people working in operational environments.
You are likely to have:
- Experience working within Health & Safety in an engineering, manufacturing or similarly operational environment.
- Practical experience facilitating workplace Risk Assessments and developing Safe Systems of Work.
- Experience producing Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Safe Working Procedures.
- Strong workshop facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills.
- The ability to turn technical and operational discussions into clear, practical documentation.
- Strong written communication and document production skills.
- A pragmatic and operationally focused approach to risk management.
- A NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
- A good working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and risk management principles.
Experience within heavy engineering, machine shops, forging, foundries, steel production or other high-hazard manufacturing environments would be particularly valuable, although development can be provided to somebody with the right wider background.
Exposure to heavy machinery, lifting operations, high-energy processes or the development of digital or visual safety training material would also be beneficial.
NEBOSH Diploma-level qualifications and membership of a recognised professional Health & Safety body would be advantageous but are not essential.
Why Consider This Opportunity? This is a particularly interesting position for somebody who enjoys the practical side of Health & Safety and wants to see the impact of their work directly within an operational environment.
You will have the opportunity to work closely with the people carrying out engineering and manufacturing activities, rather than simply reviewing documentation remotely, and will play an important role in improving the way risk controls and safe working practices are understood across the workforce.
For somebody looking to develop their career within heavy engineering and manufacturing, the business will also provide the support and development needed to build your technical knowledge within the sector.
