HV Cable Design Engineer

Our client is a leading consultancy who provide engineering and professional planning services to the power sector. They specialise in the design and survey of Overhead Lines, Underground Cables, and Substation Systems for major power transmission infrastructure the UK and internationally, working closely with the likes of National Grid. The role
We are now looking for an ambitious and dynamic individual to provide HV cable system design expertise to the company. This role is an excellent opportunity for growth and to really make a name for yourself in a collaborative environment.
Job purpose;
- Work both independently and alongside the Senior Design Engineer & other members of the team to deliver cable design projects to targeted levels of quality, timeliness, and profitability.
- Undertake cable system design, studies, and calculations to relevant BSEN/IEC/National Grid/DNO/ ENA standards and practices.
- Provide input into cable routing feasibility and detailed design studies, taking local planning, traffic management and client requirements into account, while developing the most economical cable system design.
- Prepare cable system design calculation including cable sizing assessments, earthing and interface studies.
- Engage with clients to understand project requirements and ensure that the technical scope of projects is met.
- Producing design concepts, specifications, and other technical documents. Including relaying design information to internal drafting resources.
- Attending sites for inspection and design purposes.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate HV cable designs seamlessly into larger projects.
- Quality Systems and Health & Safety:
- An understanding of the legislation and implications of such for the management of the Transmission network for both Assets and Projects, including CDM & ESQCR.
- Ensure all QA environmental and Safety Documentation is prepared and issued in accordance with company (and client) procedures.
- Operate within the quality assurance policy of the company and relevant IMS Documents.
The candidate
We are looking for an ambitious and dynamic individual with a passion for Cable Design. The role will be based at Driffield, Hessle, Derby, Whyteleafe, Tadcaster, Belfast or Caerphilly. The role may be home based but must be able to attend an office 2-3 days per week.
Qualifications
- Degree - Electrical Engineering or an equivalent qualification(s) and/or relevant experience in a related field.
- Competent in using CYMCAP or similar software
- Knowledge of AutoCAD/MicroStation (Desirable)
Experience
- Demonstrable technical skills in Transmission voltage level underground cable systems development, design and specification or demonstrable transferable skills and experience.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to demonstrate diligence and to prioritise workload.

- Self-Starter attitude, who enjoys problem solving and have an ability to communicate complex technical issues in a clear and concise manner to facilitate decision making by senior management.
- An appreciation of multi-discipline projects, and design interface management would be desirable.
- Focuses people on the client/project/department goal - Maintains sustainable customer relationships. Brings people together to find solutions for customers.
