Purpose of the Position
The Financial Accountant supports the Finance and Accounting Manager in delivering accurate, timely and compliant financial accounting and reporting for the Institute.

The position undertakes financial accounting, statutory reporting, taxation, asset accounting, reconciliations and audit support, and applies accounting standards and financial policies to maintain the integrity of the Institute’s financial records.

Duties

• Undertake month end and year end financial accounting activities, including preparation and posting of journals, reconciliations and supporting financial schedules.
• Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and financial records through regular review, reconciliation, investigation and correction of accounting matters.
• Prepare and support statutory financial reporting and taxation requirements, including Business Activity Statements, payroll tax and Fringe Benefits Tax.
• Maintain and support fixed asset, lease and other financial accounting records in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards, Institute policies and procedures.
• Prepare assigned components of the annual financial statements and other financial reports, working papers and supporting information.
• Apply accounting standards, policies and financial principles to accounting matters, investigate issues and provide advice or recommendations for review by the Finance and Accounting Manager.
• Support internal and external audit requirements, financial process improvements, and provide financial accounting guidance and assistance to Finance staff and other stakeholders as required.
• Undertake other reasonable duties within the scope of the position as directed by the Finance and Accounting Manager.

  
Selection Criteria - Essential

1. Demonstrated practical application of Australian Accounting Standards, financial accounting principles and relevant taxation requirements in a complex organisational environment.
2. Demonstrated experience in month-end and year-end financial accounting processes, including journals, reconciliations, general ledger review and preparation of supporting financial schedules.
3. Demonstrated experience in financial and statutory reporting, including preparation of financial reports, working papers and taxation or compliance returns such as BAS, payroll tax and FBT.
4. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in asset, lease and other financial accounting activities, with a strong focus on the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
5. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate financial discrepancies, assess accounting issues, identify appropriate treatments and prepare recommendations for review.
6. High level financial systems and data analysis skills, including strong Microsoft Excel skills and experience using computerised accounting and reporting systems to extract, reconcile and analyse financial information.
7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Indigenous Australian families, communities, and organisations.
8. Ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
9. Demonstrated initiative and managing workload priorities.
10. Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS Policies and Procedures.

Selection Criteria – Desirable

• Membership of, or progress towards membership of, a recognised professional accounting body such as CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
• Relevant financial accounting experience within a government, tertiary education, not-for-profit or similarly complex organisation.
• Experience using the Government Accounting System (GAS), BOXI or similar financial management and reporting systems.
