Purpose of the Position The Graphic Design and Digital Communications Officer supports the Institute's marketing, communications and engagement activities through the development and delivery of high-quality visual and digital content.
The position is responsible for graphic design, digital content production, web publishing, brand asset management and the production of publications and promotional materials across print and digital channels. The position works closely with internal stakeholders to translate information and ideas into clear, engaging and culturally appropriate communications.
The position also provides design and production support to Batchelor Press, including publication layout, typesetting, preparation of manuscripts and publications for print and digital distribution, and the development of promotional materials for published works.
Duties - Develop and produce a broad range of visual communications and promotional materials, including brochures, prospectuses, flyers, banners, publications, annual reports, newsletters, presentations, signage, merchandise and promotional materials.
- Create and adapt digital content and visual assets for websites, social media, digital displays and other online platforms.
- Develop and maintain Institute design templates, brand assets and visual resources, ensuring consistency with the Institute's Brand Guidelines and style standards.
- Manage the Institute's digital image and design asset libraries, including appropriate file management, archiving, image rights and permissions.
- Support the production and publication of content across the Institute's website and digital channels, including formatting, editing, proofreading and content optimisation.
- Develop basic motion graphics, animations and other multimedia content for digital communications using appropriate design software.
- Undertake basic photography for internal communications, marketing and promotional purposes where appropriate.
- Monitor emerging design, publishing, digital content and communication trends and provide advice on opportunities to improve the Institute's digital and publishing outputs.
- Present design and content concepts to internal stakeholders, explain design rationale, incorporate feedback and ensure final products meet communication objectives and brand standards.
- Support Batchelor Press with the design and production of publications, including layout, typesetting, formatting, cover design, preparation of print-ready and digital files, and adaptation of publications for different formats and distribution channels.
- Support effective content production workflows, including briefing, planning, prioritisation, approvals, quality assurance and delivery within agreed timeframes.
- Apply accessibility, basic search engine optimisation (SEO), content governance and digital publishing principles to web and digital content.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by the line manager.
Selection Criteria - Graphic design and visual communication
Demonstrated experience in developing and producing high-quality graphic design and visual communications across print and digital formats, using relevant design software including Adobe Creative Cloud. - Digital content and web publishing
Demonstrated experience creating, editing and publishing digital content for websites, social media and other digital channels, including experience with a content management system such as Craft CMS or equivalent. - Publishing and production
Demonstrated experience managing publications and content production from concept or brief through to final print or digital delivery, including layout, typesetting, proofreading, file preparation and quality assurance. Experience supporting publishing activities, including Batchelor Press, is highly desirable. - Brand and digital asset management
Demonstrated ability to manage and maintain brand assets, templates, image libraries and digital files, ensuring consistency with brand guidelines and appropriate management of image rights, permissions and accessibility requirements. - Writing, editing and digital communication
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write, edit and adapt content for different audiences, channels and devices, with an understanding of basic SEO, accessibility and content governance principles. - Stakeholder engagement and cultural capability
Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, with an understanding of the social, political and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities and organisations. - Organisation, initiative and delivery
Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, respond to changing requirements and consistently deliver high-quality work within agreed timeframes. - Work Health and Safety
Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices and the ability to comply with Institute WHS policies and procedures.
Desirable - Experience creating basic motion graphics or animated digital content using Adobe After Effects or equivalent software.
- Basic photography skills and experience preparing images for digital and print use.
- Experience working within a tertiary education, VET, government or Indigenous organisation.
- Relevant qualification in graphic design, digital media, communications, marketing or a related discipline.
